Everyone wins with 'Quiz Show'
,With his latest directorial effort, Robert Redford hits the jackpot

By SARAH STEWART
Considering the magnitude of the
nowclich6 0.J. Simpson case, the rela-
tively mild scandal that is the focus of
Robert Redford's newest film, "Quiz

Show," risks being trivialized. Instead,
this tale of the corrupt 1950's game
0how, "Twenty-One," digs deeper into
he human psyche than any white
Bronco could ever hope to.
From the outset, Redford insists
that his audience have as big a stake in

his film as the viewers of "Twenty-
One" had in the stardom of its contes-
tants. With "Mack the Knife" blaring
as we're lead behind the scenes of the
show, no time is wasted in preparation
for what's to come - namely, the true
story of a series of deceptions that
devastated the lives of those involved
and the American people's naive faith
in television.
Herbert Stempel (John Turturro) is
a stereotypical loser until his success as
a contestant on "Twenty-One" makes
him a winner. But as it turns out, he's
been supplied with the answers by the
show's creator, Dan Enright (David
Paymer), and is eventually coerced into
"taking a dive" because his popularity
has supposedly reached a "plateau."
Enter Charles Van Doren (Ralph
Fiennes), a good-looking, Gentile Co-
lumbia literature professor whose fa-
ther (Paul Scofield) happens to be a
famous poet. Exit Herbie, who promptly

them with financial perks. Even
Goodwin's failed attempt at protecting
Van Doren's good name seems wrong.
Or at least it should. This hesitancy
is part of the film's brilliance. Redford
generally makes you despise the acts of

corruption but also forces you to imag-
ine yourself in the same face of temp-
tation. As Stempel asks, what would
you do if you were
offered 25 grand?
Similarly,
es, who Redford under-
won Best stands, almost too
well, what's at the
kctor for heart of these
mon Goeth moral issues. In a
conversation with
's List,' Van Doren,
rt of Van Goodwin talks of
a man who re-
erfection. vealed his unfaith-
fulness to his wife
eight years after
the affair had ended; "it was the getting
away part he couldn't live with." Stuff
like this makes audiences think.
Even in less psychological terms,
"QuizShow" is agreatmovie. Fiennes,
who should have won Best Supporting
Actor for his role as Amon Goeth in
"Schindler's List," plays the part of
Van Doren with perfection. It's appro-
priate that Van Doren grasps his star-
dom with vigor yet never assumes the
despicable air his corrupt behavior
would imply, and it's completely con-
ceivable to imagine oneself behaving
just as he does.
While the role of Mark Van Doren,
Charlie's father, is a relatively mar-
ginal one, Scofield avoids the easy trap
of becoming preachy by masterfully
creating a character whose dignified
morality is a refreshing contrast to his
son's self-destructive dishonesty. The
elder Van Doren just wants Charles to
stay focused on his teaching, which
ultimately becomes impossible.
To Redford's credit, "QuizShow"'s
stylistic elements are as intriguing as
all the boring suits, greased hair and
black glasses could possibly allow. His
artistic use of cinematography seems
to play on the fact that when "Twenty-
One" aired, television was still virgin
territory."Quiz Show" is a reminder of
how quickly it became adulterated.
QUIZSHOW is playing at Showcase.
