The Michigan Daily - Friday, September 30, 1994 - 13 *HAWKEYES Continued from page 1 Sophomore running back Sedrick Shaw leads a balanced corps of running backs with 404 net yards rushing in four games. Behind him, Iowa has four of- fensive backs in triple digits in rushing. Michigan has just one back with over 100 total yards - Tshimanga *Biakabutuka with 315. Ed Davis is second with 61. The running back matchup is likely to change Saturday. After a 50-yard performance against Colorado in his first game back from a shoulder injury, Tyrone Wheatley is expected to break out. "He was my first pick for first-team All-American (last year) and for the Heisman Trophy," Fry said. "I'm real happy that he's healthy, but if Gary wants to be my friend, (he should)just leave Tyrone at home this week." Wheatley is especially scary to a team like Iowa, which has allowed its opponents an average of 207 rushing yards per game. "We haven't been doing a really good job of tackling, as much as any- *thing," Fry said. "On the other hand, in defense of the defense, we've been giving the ball up on our end of the field, where the other team didn't have far to go to score a touchdown." In fact, when asked his team's strengths, Fry replied, "We haven't located 'em yet. We're still searching." There are some -namely the ground game - and the Hawkeyes also feature a future solid quarterback *n sophomore Ryan Driscoll. Driscoll has 742 passing yards, com- paredto U-M signal callerTodd Collins' 740, but Collins hasplayed in one less game. He also had to reckon with teams like Notre Dame and Colorado. "(Driscoll) gets a B+ right now, as far as a first-year quarterback," Fry said. Moeller has been pleased with Collins' poise under pressure, but is concerned about the ability of the of- fense as a whole to convert on scoring chances. "We've got to hold on to the foot- ball longer," Moeller said. Achieving that goal will take pres- sure off the defense, which has been a concern as of late for Michigan. The Wolverines are 11th in the Big Ten in 'We've got to hold onto the football longer.' -Gary Moell/er Michigan head coach total defense, due mostly to the 500- plus yards racked up by Boston Col- lege and Colorado. As the Big Ten season progresses, that statistic is likely to change. After all, linebacker Jarrett Irons' 16-tackle effort against Colorado did earn him Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors. And Michigan did beat two nationally-ranked teams without the help of outside linebackerMatt Dyson. With the Colorado game behind him, Moeller will turn his attentions to his ultimate goal: Winning theconfer- ence. Will Iowa stand in the way? That's where Fry's confidence will be tested. Said the coach of his Hawkeyes: "We're certainlyjusta mediocre football team this year."
