The Michigan Daily - Weekend etc. - Thursday, September 29, 1993 -5 SSwiss 'Saire' returns to campus by leaps and bounds By LIZ SHAW In a much anticipated return visit, the Philippe Saire Dance Company of Switzerland descends on the Power Center for one night of celebrated European dance theater. Especially intriguing is the presentation of their new piece "Vacarme," which is loosely inspired by the apocalyptic image of the eclipse in the Middle Ages. Much of the excitement of the 'We don't get to see much European dancing in Ann Arbor, but there's a lot going on over there.' - Jessica Fogel, Dance Department troupe's visit surrounds the availabil- ity of such an internationally known company to come to campus for the second time in two years. "We don't get to see much Euro- pean dancing in Ann Arbor, but there's a lot going on over there, and that is mostly because of (German dancer/ choreographer) Pina Bausch," said Jessica Fogel of the Dance Depart- ment. The five-member troupe concen- trates on physically demanding cho- reography and a lot of repetition as a means of getting their point across. They base many pieces on relation- "Much of their work is based on the power of this woman's work," Fogel said, "and while their composi- tions show a great deal of her influ- ence, they have very much conceived their own structures." This is the Saire Company's sec- ond visit through the Dance Depart- ment. On their first visit they pre- sented an original interpretation of Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream" in which they highlighted the more contemporary and physical as- pects of the play, and followed a more general theme of manipulation in male-female relationships. "The ideas of the piece were so clear, but held a mystery and wit that was very compelling. They are truly inspiring," commented Fogel. This is the first offering of the department's sixth annual Guest Art- ist Series. Next month's guest, Heidi Durning, is another international art- ist who is also a University alum of the MFA program. PHILIPPE SAIRE DANCE COM- PANY will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at Mendelssohn Theatre. Tickets are $10 and $6. Call 764-0450.
