I Athlt fteWee WHO: Betsy Axley TEAM: Women's Soccer HOMETOWN: Wilmette, Illinois YEAR: Freshman ELIGIBITY: Freshman WHY: Axley played a part in all four of Michigan's goals in Wednesday's 4-0 victory over Tiffin. Axley scored two goals and added two assists for six points on the day. Axley added four shots in Friday's loss to Minnesota, and contributed an assist in yesterday's 5-0 victory over Valparaiso. BACKGROUND: Axley had an accomplished soccer career before joining the Wolverines this fall. She played for Star 'n' Stripes, a United States All-Star team that competed in Europe. She has also been a member of the Trevian Soccer Club her entire soccer career. She is among the Wolverine's team leaders in shots (24) and points (two goals, three assists, seven points) and has started seven of eight games. Axley =I READ DAILY SPORTS SOCCER Continued from page 1 shot advantage for the first half with the only Crusader shot coming off of a direct free kick. The second half saw more of the same, with the Wolverines dominat- ing play. Every player on the Michi- gan squad saw action, and the Wol- verines outshot Valparaiso, 17-2. The lone goal of the half was scored by Michigan senior Carrie Taylor. The goal was her first as a varsity player and was particularly sweet. "I've been waiting for a long time and it felt really good," Taylor said. "I'm a senior and I'd played on the club team for three years. It's just really nice to get in the varsity record books." The Crusaders have played a num- ber of prominent programs this sea- son and Valparaiso coach Ceyhun Ozgur feels the Wolverines will be extremely competitive. "They're probably the best first- year program I've ever seen," Ozgur said. "They're very strong on the ball, they win a lot of first balls, and they have several players with good touches. They're going to be very good." Belkin hopes they will be very goo when they face Big Ten foes North- western on Friday and Wisconsin on Sunday. Both games are on the road. "The win is important because we got everyone involved," Belkin said. "Everyone works hard in practice and everyone needs to contribute. We've got two big games coming up, and both teams are well coached, so we'll need everyone to be ready." It wouldn't hurt if they were angry as well.
