The players stood out from their IM counterparts, who donned the tradi- tional red and yellow pull-overjerseys, not only by dress, but by their superior play. Or so they hoped. The starting whistle blew and nei- ther team seemed able to get it together. In a half riddled with free and corner kicks, it wasn't until the end of the half that the Wolverines appeared to snap out of its lull. It started when Michigan midfielder Ian Kurth kicked a good cross pass to junior forward Andy Cosenza, Cosenza's shot missed, but it appeared to be the spark that set the Wolverines into motion. Soon afterwards, Michi- gan midfielder Adam Carriere nearly beat Macomb goalie Adam Mangiapane on a breakaway, but Mangiapane made an outstanding div- ing save to keep the score tied at zero. Midway through the second half, the Wolverines got the break they needed. Mangiapane deflected a cor- ner kick, but Kurth was there to put it in the net. "It took 72 minutes before we put things together," Michigan coach Steve Burns said. "It should be five minutes into (the game) when I can breath a sigh of relief." See SOCCER, Page 8 By TIM SMITH Daily Sports Writer Even though the Michigan women's soccer team was upstaged by the prac- ticing marching band before its 4-0 win over NAIA power Tiffin (5-3), once the game started the Wolverines were the only act in town. Freshman forward Betsy Axley led the Wolverines (3-2-1) with two goals while assisting sophomore Kim Phillips on two others. "I think we work well together," Axley said of her on-field chemistry with Phillips. "I like playing with her because she's always communicating with me, and it helps a lot on the field for someone to always be talking to you." The Wolverines struck early and often in the first half. Phillips started the scoring six minutes into the game when Axley hit her with a pass in front of the goal. At 18:07, Axley assisted Phillips again with a pass ten yards out of the penalty box. Phillips followed with a high, hard shot over Tiffin goalie Carrie Shroeder to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead. At 29:44, freshman defender Michelle McQuaid's pass over the de- fense allowed Axley to score a breakaway goal to give Michigan a 3- 0 halftime lead. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Axley scored her second goal to cap the Wolverines 4-0 victory. After the game, Axley was modest about her performance. "Just because I had two goals and two assists doesn't make it my best game," Axley said. "This game I tried to keep my composure when I was shooting and it paid off." Michigan coach Debbie Belkin, though, was impressed with the performace of both Axley and Phillips. "Kim got some good goals and Betsy got some goals and had some chances," Belkin said. "So it was nice to see them do well." In addition to the efforts of Belkins and Phillips, goaltenders Jory Welkins and Alicia Smith helped pace the Wol- verines by combining for 14 saves. The win gives Michigan much needed confidence and momentum going in to its weekend matchups against Minnesota and Valparaiso. "It's a good win but Minnesota is a tough team," Belkin said. "And Valparaiso is not as strong as Minne- sota, but it's tough being the third game in five days." r amazin' blue is holding auditions for a tenor slot there will be a mass meeting on Sun. 9/25 at 6:00 P.M. in room 2105 Michigan Union For more info call University Activities Center at 763-1107 Ale To Sophomore goalkeeper Andy Germak stops a Macomb corner kick attempt as Chad Hiser looks on.
