10- The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, September 21, 1994 FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK Colorado coach keeps memories of Michigan By CHAD A. SAFRAN Daily Football Writer Colorado coach Bill McCartney finally gets his chance to see what the view is like from the visiting sideline in Michigan Stadium Saturday. From 1974-81, McCartney served as a defensive assistant to then-Wolver ine head coach Bo Schembechler. McCartney, a native of Riverview, Mich., replaced Gary Moeller as defensive coordinator in 1977, following Moeller's departure for the head coaching position at Illinois. While many former Michigan assistants go on to other programs, few of them come to the Wolverines directly from the prep level, as McCartney did. He led Divine Child High School in Dearborn to a 30-5 mark during his three- year tenure (1971-73) as head football coach. McCartney considers his arrival at Michigan in 1974 to be one of his fondest memories. "If I'm not mistaken I think I'm the only high school coach out of Michigan that Bo ever hired," McCartney said. "I certainly wasn't ready when they hired0 me, but they gave me an opportunity." McCartney acknowledged the 1980 season and eventual 23-6 1981 Rose Bowl victory as another of his fonder moments on the sidelines with Michigan. The reason that year stands out? The final 18 quarters of the regular season, the Wolverines did not allow a touchdown. They also kept Washington from reaching the end zone in Pasadena. McCartney is not alone in making a coaching return to Michigan. Offen- sive coordinator Elliot Uzelac worked under Schembechler in 1974 and from 1981-86. LIGHTING IT UP: The Michigan defense allowed an average of 427 yards in.0 the Wolverines' first two contests this season, but neither Boston College nor Notre Dame brought in the impressive offensive statistics the Buffaloes posses. Colorado ranks third nationally in scoring with 51.5 points per game, including 55 in its win over Wisconsin. Kordell Stewart leads an offense that ranks fourth in the NCAA in total offense (548.5 yards per game). Individual standouts highlight the Buffaloes' potent attack, especially Stewart. The senior quarterback owns the fifth-best individual total offense mark in the country with 296 yards per game. His 8-for-15, 249-yard, two- touchdown effort against the Badgers helped him garner Big Eight Offensive Player of the Week honors. Stewart also holds an efficiency rating of 203.50 (No.2 in Division I-A). He needs just 156 yards to break the school's total offense record of 5,808 yards, held by Darian Hagan. Yet the Colorado attack still relies on the ground game a great deal. Tailback Rashaan Salaam is first in the NCAA in scoring with 42 points and scored four touchdowns against the Badgers. IT WAS 20 YEARS AGO TODAY: Colorado and Michigan played their only previous matchup against one another Sept. 21, 1974. The Wolverines blanked the Buffaloes, 31-0, behind the running of Rob Lyte (66 yards) and Chuck Heater (74 yards), currently Colorado's secondary coach. Michigan held the Buffaloes to 181. yards on the day while totaling 388 yards of its own. MARQUEE MATCHUPS: While Colorado remains a formidable opponent for the entire Michigan team, Wolverine wide receiver Amani Toomer needs to deal with another outstanding defensive back out to stop him. Notre Dame's All-America, Bobby Taylor, was in charge of shutting down Toomer two weeks ago. Now, Chris Hudson stands in his way. Hudson, one of the preseason candidates for the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's best defensive back, is just four interceptions shy of breaking the Colorado school record. The Wolverines have one of college football's top cornerbacks as well in Ty Law, who came into the 1994 season as a contender for the Thorpe Award. Law will have his hands full with Michael Westbrook, Colorado's game- breaking wideout, who returned from a one-game suspension against Wiscon- sin and caught three passes, including one touchdown, for 84 yards.
