Pulp His 'n' Hers ;Island Pulp is the latest British import determined to make an impression on the largely American alternative scene. Like their fellow Englishmen in Blur, the Auteurs, and the London Suede, Pulp makes tawdry sex, sleazy situations aud failed relationships the focus of their decadent image. How- ever, they do not have the songs to back up the persona. Where Blur is escapist, giddy en- tertainment, the London Suede is glamorously depraved, and the Auteurs are poetically alienated Pulp seems generically debauched; songs like "Pink Glove" and "Do You Re- member the First Time?" have mod- erately interesting titles, but lyrically and sonically they fall flat. Pulp sounds like second-rate Bowie, resplendent with suddenly trendy-again cheesy synthesizers and the vocals of the marginally talented Jarvis Cocker. With a range from murky bass to creaky falsetto, it's hard not to laugh when he spouts inanities like "On a pink quilted eiderdown, I want to pull your knickers down." Ultimately, Pulp are victims of their own tackiness - but not nearly as much as their listen- ers are. - Heather Phares Coming of Age Coming of Age Zoo Records When Boyz II Men hit the scene in 1991, they inspired many would be stars. Coming of Age, a quintet from Los Angeles ranging in age from 17 to 20, is one such group. ,These five brothas have done a beautiful job of correlating many of the elements of Boyz II Men's success while still maintaining some originality as an "upper-class" personification of Boyz II Men's round-da-way sounds. The self-arrangement of these guys is identical to Boyz II Men. They have a deep bass singer, a high-pitched soprano and everything in the range between. Even the groups' names are similar. However, Coming of Age is no Boyz II Men clone. These guys, who began working on their first demo in@ 1992, are debuting with a CD con- taining songs which sums up the en- tire genre of R&B music, from doo wop ("Intimate") to hip hop ("You Turn Me on") to acapella ("One in a Million"). They even do an amazing job remaking the Isley Brothers' hit single "Between the Sheets," which drips sensuality like R.-Kelly's "Bump 'N Grind." Not everything on "Coming of,- Age" is fantastic. "Now Ya Know" shows that these guys ain't no Bell Biv Devoe, and "I'd Rather be with You" is so dry their lips probably crack while they're singing it. Overall, though, this album is a beautiful piece of work, and as they continue in their work, the men of Coming of Age will without a doubt get even better.
