Harvard vs. Yale. Michigan vs. Ohio State - someof the greatestrivalries incollege sports. And today, the Wolverine-Buck- eye rivalry extends to women's soccer for the first time, when the two squads square off in their Big Ten opener at 4 p.m. at Elbel Field. Michigan comes off an 1-0, over- time victory Wednesday night against Detroit-Mercy. In the win, the Wolverines' defense came up big, holding the Titans scoreless for the entire affair. However, Michi- gan coach Debbie Belkin realizes performing a similar feat against the more talented Buckeyes will not be as easy. "They've got a forward in Lisa Sutmiller who scores a lot of goals. 'We'll have to work hard to keep her away from the ball," Belkin said. "(Buckeye center-midfielder) Jody Stranges is solid in the middle." Belkin plans to match freshman defender Carrie Povilaitis against Sutmiller in hopes of neutralizing the potent Buckeye scoring threat. Though Belkin was pleased with the play of her team against Detroit- .*Mercy, she wants to work on a number of things for today's game with Ohio State. "Against these tougher teams, we have to stay in control of the ball," Belkin said. "We must work on maintaining possession. We have to continue to create scoring oppor- tunities." Belkin tried to diminish the impor- tance of the Michigan-Ohio State ri- valry. She considered tonight's game im- portant because it marks the begin- ning of the conference schedule. "(The Big Ten season) is going to betough," Belkin said. "It's going to be a long road. We really want to win the first game." The Buckeyes, rankedeighth in the region, played impressively in their 'recent match with Wisconsin. Belkin compared Ohio State, a second-year program, to the Indiana team that de- feated Michigan, 3-1, last Saturday in Bloomington. Freshman forward Ruth Poulin said she is excited to be involved in the historical contest. "We're the underdogs, but we're going to surprise some people. We want this victory. Blue warms up in Ypsilanti Michigan opens season at Eastern Michigan Invite By EUGENE BOWEN Daily Sports Writer While most Michigan students get ready to go out and party, the men's cross-country team will be in Ypsilanti tonight competing in its first meet of the season, the Eastern Michigan In- vitational, at 6:30 p.m. Ron Warhurst, entering his 21st year as Wolverine cross-country head coach, leads team captain Ian Forsyth and 10 other Michigan runners into competition against runners from eight other schools. Forsyth, junior Kris Eggle, sopho- mores David Barnett and Ryan Burt and freshman Don McLaughlin are key runners for the Wolverines. McLaughlin, a graduate of Ann Ar- bor Pioneer, is the only first-year run- ner competing for Michigan. The Eastern Michigan Invitational is more of a warm-up than a fierce competition, and Warhurst won't un- leash his entire arsenal of runners. "This is a low-key meet, so we aren't running our top two," said Warhurst, referring to junior Scott MacDonald and sophomore Kevin Sullivan. Canadians MacDonald and Sullivan participated in the Commonwealth Games, held in their home country, and Warhurst wants the pair to recuperate as much as possible before the major meets of the season, such as the Big Ten Championship. Despite the meet's relative lack of importance, Forsyth isn't playing the race down too much. "This is the first real meet, so everyone's pretty excited," Forsyth said. "It's going to be a good gauge of our progress so far." Forsyth Forsyth plans for the Wolverines, who are ranked fifth, to end the sea- son in the top four. "I hope to be captain of the best team ever," Forsyth said. DOUGLAS KANTER/Daily The Michigan women's soccer team begins its initial season in the Big Ten today against Ohio State.
