10 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, September 13, 1994 RECORDS Continued from page 9 Rev) is a champion of this young band. With connections like this, it almost doesn't matter if Rollerskate Skinny is any good; indeed, they snagged a second-stage position on this year's Lollapalooza lineup (not around here, though). However, the band is good, and the buzz they gener- ateon their debut"ShoulderVoices" is much more important than the buzz of their supporters. Musically, however, they don't fall too far from the family tree; Rollerskate Skinny's sound is similar to a hybrid of the bone-crushing drone-beauty of My Bloody Valentine and the fuzzed-out meanderings of Mercury Rev. But Rollerskate Skinny score the coup of being even more weird and psyche- delic than either of those two bands. At their best, they produce beautifully trance-inducing music like "Miss Leader," "Ages," and "Shallow Thun- der" and the pop anomaly "Bring On Stigmata." At their worst, the inspired noise-jams on "Shoulder Voices" dwindle into noodling. But Rollerskate Skinny prove that they are more than a industry created sensation on this in- triguing release. - Heather Phares WorIA-Oiri Worl-A-Girl Chaos Records Entering the realm of dancehall music, one almost completely un- charted by women, are the four women of Worl-A-Girl. And, are these women equipped with the musical arsenal nec- essary to make it in this business? Hell if they're not. Their smash hit "No Gunshot" is already making big waves in the right places. It's a powerful plea against gun violence made at atime when too many songs are glorifying the bullet. "Ten Commandments" is a musical listing which, in these women's view, define the ideal man. "You That I Want" is perhaps the most beautiful song on the LP talking about the most beautiful thing in the world - true love. "Worl-A-Girl" is a great CD. With this type of album under their belts, these women aren't out to redefine the mapofdancehall; they're ready to write their own. -Eugene Bowen fluf Home Improvements Headhunter Records fluf is the type of band that revels in their indie-rock glory: their album is on the teeny-tiny (but very cool) Head- hunter label and the spine of their CD proudly proclaims, "Digital technolgy can give you the shits. Smoke dick," and one of the songs on "Home Im- provements" is called "You Should Have Bought the Vinyl." Although it is somewhat against the band'sprinciples, this CD (recorded in analog) is suprisingly catchy and accessible. The band's sound isamix of Husker Du, Sugar and Pere Ubu - energetic punk-pop. The finest songs on "Home Improvements," like "Sticky Bun," "Nirvana, Brass Ring" and "Twister," create an immense desire to pogo fre- netically around the room; the slow song "Mark Andrea" captures much of the greatness of Bob Mould's ballads. When it comes to creating classic- sounding independent music, fluf are not to be taken lightly. - Heather Phares Various Artists Excursion in Ambience - The Second Orbit Astralwerks Ambient music is defined by tex- ture, landscape and new forms of real- ity. No longer simply music, Ambi- ence is away to alter reality through the ears. Ambience is an escape to a new dimension controlled by the artists who create their own ground rules. Ambi- ence is fantasy music that challenges the ground-rules of our secure reality. "Excursions In Ambience - The Second Orbit" is a good overview of what this emerging music form has to offer. All of the tracks successfully transport the listener to a new environ- ment. Yet, no two tracks take you to the same place. "No One in the World," by W.F.O., is a dreamy escape to a cloud city that looms just beyond our reach. The drum tracks and bass make this song percep- tibly danceable and complex as well. "Prospero" by Locust is a bass-domi- nated -yet never overwhelmingly so -song whose dark nature nearly over- shadows a center of sensitivity and insight. Mauriio's "Ploy" is a musical paradox that combines the earth bound with the ethereal. Autocreation's "Dark Smile" swings towards the tribal end of the ambient continuum and is replete with complex drums sounds and mind- bending amplitory expressions. The entire album is a topographical map of the minds behind this blossom- ing form of expression. Do not merely .t Wor-A-Girl are certain to make some waves in the realm of dancehall with their entrancing eponymous debut. listen to this disc, exist within it and raise your consciousness to a new level of techno, with only the whims of the musicians to guide you. But, do not be surprised when the disc ends if you long to go back to the mythical world of ambience again and again. Sire / Reprise The Farm have undergone a com- plete makeover. Gone are the annoying dance-pop tunes like "Groovy Train;" instead they have remade themselves as a guitar-drums-bass outfit, playing power-pop with a concience. The band even goes so far as to cover the The Flamin' Groovies' classic "Shake Some Action," with which they do a compe- tent job. Songs like "Messiah" and "The Man Who Cried" see the Farm trying as hard as possible to distance themselves from their previous, brassy output; a wise move, for what they still lack in substance is made up for in vastly improved style. They remain a pleasant, frothy pop confection that should not be taken too seriously. - Heather Phares ;'t - Ben Ewy The Farm Hullabaloo The Dean of Students Office is hosting a Public Comments Session regarding the Interim Dance/Party Policy Tonight! 7:00pm - 9:00pm in the Pendleton Room of the Michigan Union Anyone wanting to make a public comment pertaining to this policy is invited to attend.
