Sanders just 406 yards s after performance agair PONTIAC (AP) - Watching Barry Sanders running was almost like a religious experience for Detroit coach Wayne Fontes. Sanders rushed 20 times for 188 yards and one touchdown yesterday and the Lions held on for a 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers. The outgoing Fontes was almost speechless after the record-setting day by Sanders kept the Lions hopes alive for an NFC wild-card berth and prob- ably sank Green Bay's chances. his single-season recordof 1,548 yards, set in 1991, during the run. "He's a great one," Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren said. "He's an awesome player, especially on the arti- ficial turf field. No! He's a great player anywhere." The Packers drove to the Lions' 17 late in the fourth period, but Willie Clay came up with Detroit's second interception. "It didn't surprise me," Lions line- backer Chris Spielman said. "Barry had, what, two weeks in a row under 50 yards. He was due to bust loose.I sensed it coming in practice. He was running with a little more purpose this week." Each team has three regular season games remaining. The Lions play at New York Jets, home against the Mi nesota Vikings, and close out on Christ- mas Day at Miami. The Packers play the Chicago Bears in Green Bay, the Atlanta Falcons in Milwaukee, and close out Christmas Eve at Tampa Bay. "I think it was emotional," Fontes said. "We had to win this game. This was a divisional game. If we lose to Green Bay, we fall back further in to NFC Central." Brett Favre completed 29 of 43 passes for 366 yards and three touch- downs for Green Bay, but had two costly interceptions. They were rare mistakes for Favre who had thrown for 13 TDs with just two interceptions in the five games before this one. He had three TD passes against the Lions in Milwaukee. Dave Krieg was 18 of 30 for 1 yards and two TDs for Detroit, without any interceptions. It was the second straight error-free game for Krieg. He passed for 351 yards and three TDs with no interceptions in a Thanksgiv- ing win over Buffalo. The score was 24-24 in the third quarter when Anthony Morgan, who had six catches for 103 yards, got be- hind cornerback Greg Jeffries for t* second time in broken coverage. Mor- gan caught a 47-yard TD pass from Favre for a 31-24 Green Bay lead. Jason Hanson, who had a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter, pulled Detroit to 31-27 with a 34-yard fiefd goal. There were three lead changes in the final 8:22 of the second quarter, when Detroit outscored the Pack= 21-7 for a 24-21 halftime lead. The Packers took a 14-3 lead on a 27-yard pass from Favre to Morgan and a 96-yard kickoff return by Robert Brooks. I watch miles and miles of film. I see hundreds each year. "But when they made him, that's the prototype you want. Guys, he's the best I've ever seen. And he's a whale of an individual. He's just one guy you want on the team." A 63-yard run by Sanders set up the go-ahead 1Lyard TD dive by Derrick Moore with 9:02 left. Sanders broke its own 46-yard line. The win was a payback for a 38- 30 Green Bay victory three weeks ago when the Packers (6-7) held the NFL's leading rusher to 47 yards in Milwaukee. The Lions (7-6) moved ahead of the Packers in the NFC Cen- tral with the victory. "This hurts, sure," Holmgren said. "But we'll continue to play hard right to the end." Sanders now leads the NFL with 1,594 yards. That leaves him 406 shy An Arbor Radio and T'V 91Vl Studio I Iu'ininT ininu n 77niuf uuuuv11 11_in F a -0.
