18 - The Michigan Daily - Best of Ann Arbor - Thursday, April 14, 1994 The Michigan Da Thomas Crowley's Best of: Best Albums: 1. Teenage Fanclub -"Thirteen" The Fannies know that without a de- cent melody, you can't have a decent song. The Glaswegian quartet also knows that without a collection of decent songs, you can't have a decent album. Their follow-up to "Band- wagonesque" is full of exceedingly catchy songs, written and sung excep- tionally by all four members of a band that proves once and for all that pop is not dead. 2. Kirsty MacCol -"Titanic Days" A fantastic album. Best Single: Suede -"Stay Together" American critics who dismissed Suede as a flash-in-the-pan should tie on their bibs and prepare to eat their words. The first single from their follow-up to what was easily the best album of 1993 - their self-titled debut - packs the same kind of power as "Ani- mal Nitrate" and "The Drowners," but is not by any means a re-write of the songs on their first album. "Stay To- gether" is a wonderfully unique, eight-minute epic that makes it per- fectly clear that the band plans to con- tinue using every ounce of their es- sence to hammer away at the safe, ordinary rock music of the main- stream. The two B-sides, the acous- tic "The Living Dead" and "My Dark Star" are equally as satisfying, equally as enjoyable. Place to Work Out: CCRB Between the IM's inconvenient hours, and the NCRB's inconvenient location, this one was a shoe-in. Or maybe we should say "a gym-shoe_ in"? Campus Tradition: Naked Mile Hey, it's healthy (assuming spring arrives in time), and it's one of the best spectator sports. But beware of flying body parts. Cause/Issue/Movement: Hash Bash Is Hash Bash a cause, or just an ex- cuse for 10,000 people to get stoned and trash the Diag? Activist Group: NORML This is the "Apathetic '90s." Are there any other activist groups left? Protest Slogan: Take Back the Night Though "Donna Martin graduates" got quite a few votes, it seems that "Take Back the Night" is more wor- thy. (Is it coincidence that our friends the West Beverly alumni participated in a Take Back the Night march?) Regent: Shirley McFee (R-Battle Creek) Deep down, she reminds all of us of out grandmothers. MSA Member: Craig Greenberg Sort of a nice hurrah for our outgo- ing Prez. Is he going to come write country music reviews for the Daily or not? P.S. - Paul Scublinsky is cool. 4," h !.' ?4ti We offer... *Discounted Student Airfares *Eurailpasses Issued On-The-Spot *Hostel Cards *International ID Cards *Work Abroad Programs eTravel Guidebooks And Gear *Expert Travel Advice andmore...
