Love them or hate them, Nirvana changed the face of rock 'n' roll with their abrasive tunes and heartfelt lyr- ics. "In Utero" is one hell of a bril- liant album, and the death of Kurt Cobain will be a great loss to the rock world. The comparisons to Jim, Jimi and John are inevitable, and even if they are unwarranted, Cobain's loss is to today as theirs were to yester- day. 2. The Afghan Whigs released the best album of the school year, "Gentle- men." Even though their new video for the title track looks like a soap opera for Gap kids, they still play disturbing and twisted rock with more licks than a Tobasco flavored Tootsie Roll Pop. 3. Pearl Jam played Crisler Arena. Security :y checkpoints, identification bracelets and an enforced sitting policy - sounds (and felt) more like entering a war prison than a rock 'n' roll show. The band gave a good performance though. 4. Rocket From the Crypt's gig in Feb- ruary at the Union Ballroom. UAC's speakers were piles of shit and the to decipher their secret shelving sys- tem. But that's how you'll discover most of the gems in their two stores. Magazines: Borders Now that Community Newscenter has gone out of business, where else is there? Borders is pretty cool, but they don't have TheaterWeek or Oral- rama. Haircut: Supercuts "It's a hip kind of place," says Daily staff reporter Scot Woods. You should see his hair. First-run Theater: Showcase Well worth the $10 cab ride to get you out there. If you like movie theaters that look like airport terminals. Video Store: Video Watch Sure, if you want to truck up to Ply- mouth Road or down Washtenaw. But any place that has six copies of "Res- ervoir Dogs" is okay with us. "Either they're dead, or alive, or the cops got 'em, or they don't." Liquor/Party store: Village Corner They've got it all - from cheap beer to the hard stuff (Ben and Jerry's, of course). Their wine cellar is among the most eclectic in the Western world. But what's with the new red awning? Photocopying: Kinko's It's only a matter of months before Kinko's forces every other copy store in Ann Arbor out of business. Sporting Goods: State Street Sports Hey, go there yourself. They're on, uh, State Street. Groceries: Meijer Everyone buys their groceries at Meijer. It's just the place to go. Study lounges, free bulk candy, and you can shop for clothes while you're at it. Florist: Normandie Proving that indeed, roses are red, and violets are blue. So what are you wait- ing for? Get on the phone and send your loved ones some flowers. Roses, pink roses. Travel Agency: Boersma You know who to call when you're planning that trip to Europe after graduation. Hey, do they take entree plus? Michigan Items: Moe's It's just so, so maize-n-blue. What can we say? Hail to those victors. Posters: Wherehouse Seeing as Stairway to Heaven hasn't changed their poster selection since Nixon, Wherehouse was the clear winner.
