22 - The Michigan Daily - Best ofAnnArbor - Thursday April 14 114 0 0 0 The Michigan Da rrrVfTh l Vil~i L/{ Best (and Worst) of University Players: "The Heidi Chronicles" ("Butterfingers Angel ...") "The Heidi Chronicles," thanks to a cut-and-paste job by director John Neville-Andrews, was a humorous and intelligent portrayal of a feminist art historian and her generation. "Butterfingers Angel ..." was cast well, but was lost in the Power Cen- ter and no one - not even the cast - could find it. Best (and Worst) Non-University Players: "The Colored Museum" ("King Lear, Part One") Part of a week-long "project" com- prised of panels, readings and exhib- its, "The Colored Museum" (dir. Julie Nessen) opened some eyes and shocked some systems in its attempt to direct theater into the 21st century. It worked. John Russell Brown wanted to sim- plify Shakespeare's massive tragedy by cutting it down in "King Lear, Part One." It didn't work. Best (and Worst) University Musi- cal: "Quilt: A Musical Celebration" ("Fiddler on the Roof') "Quilt" is possibly the only musical to date to depict those left behind af- ter AIDS strikes their loved ones. It was the story of a diverse group of people - gay and straight, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, lovers and friends. Let's hope this celebration makes it big. While "Fiddler on the Roof' could really never fail, it was clearly too much for MUSKET to handle. A Tevye does not a "Fiddler" make. Honorable Mention: "Brigadoon" Because "Brigadoon" was presented after the Best of Ann Arbor '93, it was ineligible for the musical category (as Korean: Steve's Lunch We know, how can a place called "Steve's" have good Korean food? But it's quick, cheap and good. Try the bi-bim-bop. Mexican: The Burro What? Taco Bell didn't win? There is no justice ... Vegetarian: Seva Sure, if you want to pay 10 bucks for some obnoxiously weird concoction. Deli: Zingerman's Best prosciutto this side of Italy. We swear. Greasy Spoon: Brown Jug Ahh. Feel the grease dribbling down your throat. Hear those arteries clog- ging. Anyone want a burger? Sports Bar: Scorekeepers Or, as those who frequent this fine establishment call it, "Keepers." And after you leave, you can go to Kinko's and photocopy your face. Breakfast: Angelo's Yet another surprise. Try the french toast. And if you're lucky, your wait- ress will even try to give you love advice. Ours did. Dinner: Gratzi Not only is it the best Italian food in town (see page six), but with the large mural, the accordian player and com- plimentary Frangelico or Sambuca to finish the meal, they give you not just a meal, but a whole experience. Take-out: Pizza House Just how many flavors of shakes can they possibly make? Cafe: Amer's The place where you can be preten- tious and have good food. Order a mocha with no schlag, and expound on Foucault. Late-night Munchies: Taco Bell It has to be good for something. Plus, this is the only restaurant on the list where you can buy a meal with the change in between your couch cush- ions. Place For the Folks to Take You: Gandy Dancer For what it costs, your parents are the only ones who can afford to take you there. Romantic Evening: Gandy Dancer It's cozy, it's intimate. Cuddle cuddle and all that crap. Dorm Cafeteria: Stockwell Alice Lloyd got shafted! We demand a recount! Best Overall Restaurant: Gandy Dancer Whether you take your parents or a date, the food will still be good. Best Overall Bar: (tie) Ashley's and Scorekeepers No one can beat Ashley's beer or juke- box selection, and Scorekeepers is the place for ... what is it the place for? Stephanie Fybel and Paul Molnar made "The Heidi Chronicles" our fave. "The Most Happy Fella" opens tonight, and we're sure Erin Dilly will be great. But it deserves mention - nay, heaps of praise and worship - because it was a stunning production all around. Best (and Worst) Set: "Brigadoon" ("42nd Street") But heck, we thought we'd make "Brigadoon" eligible in this category this year. How tall were those trees, anyway? The "42nd Street" set wasn't bad in itself; it just needed a bit more glue. Best (and Worst) Costumes: "Major Barbara" ("Butterfingers An- gel ...") "Major Barbara"'s turn-of-the-century costumes were accurate and well-as- sembled; "Butterfingers Angel ...," well, whatever. Best (and Worst) Lighting: "The Lion and the Jewel" ("42nd Street") The lighting was just the tip of an all- around good production of Wole Soyinka's "The Lion and the Jewel"; it was just one of the many faults in a could've-been-so-beautiful produc- tion of "42nd Street." Script We Would Like to Rewrite Award: "Butterfingers Angel ..." Let's give the U Players some credit here. William Gibson (who also wrote "The Miracle Worker") didn't give them much to work with. Best (and Worst) Direction of a University Production: (tie) John Schak, "Quilt" and John Neville-Andrews "The Heidi Chronicles" (John Neville-Andrews, "Butterfingers Angel ...")sv Schak made "Quilt" accessible to ev- Not only do students go tc 629 E.
