Italian: Gratzi All we can say is thank goodness Ol- ive Garden didn't win. For Northern Italian fare, Gratzi is amazing. Scrumptious salads, marvelous main courses and delectable desserts. Middle Eastern: Jerusalem Garden Not only is it economical and away from the hustle-and-bustle of the State Street area, they wrap up their falafel so it's easy to eat. This year we eat shwarma in Ann Arbor, but next year, we hope to eat it in Jerusalem. Or at the Jerusalem Garden. Chinese: Dinersty Go for the General Tso's chicken if you can stomach it. Surely we'll remember his wit, intelligence, comedic timing and most of all his sincerity. Best New Performer: Heather Dilly Stepping in halfway through the show, Dilly made her debut as the bitchy Dorothy Brock in "42nd Street." She then went to play two hilarious roles in "The Heidi Chronicles," proving her versatility and her freshness. Keep an eye on her. Best Basement Arts: "Remember Me" An original play with a thoroughly unoriginal script, "Remember Me" was nonetheless a compelling story of how AIDS afflicted a pair of lov- ers and their friends and family. The Most Uninhibited Award: "Welcome Back, Kotter ... Let's Dance" (Performance Network) Rumor has it the cast stripped down naked and smoked pot in the last scene. Do we hear a revival? Best (and Worst) National Tour: "The Who's 'Tommy"' ("Grease") "Tommy" rocked Detroit's Masonic Temple for three glorious weeks, her- alding the return of rock music to Broadway; "Grease" slipped and slid through the massive Fox Theatre with two leads who couldn't sing (Ricky Paull Goldin and Susan Wood) and Rosie O'Donnell whose comic cracks couldn't save this day-glow, ridicu- lous production. Neville- Andrews saved an otherwise choppy, poorly-written "Heidi" by cleverly tinkering with the scene structure. However, Neville-Andrews is not without fault, as seen in his direction of "Butterfingers Angel ..." If he didn't know what to do with it, how was the cast supposed to know? Most Prolific Performer: Paul Molnar With supporting roles in "The Rogues Trial," "Butterfingers Angel ..." and "Major Barbara," and a lead in "The Heidi Chronicles," Molnar proved he had versatility and stamina. Does this guy ever take a break? Best Performance in a University Players/MT production: Elise Bryant and Danny Gurwin, "The Heidi Chronicles"; Ronit Mitzner, "Quilt"; John Halmi and Brooke Ferris, "Quilt" As for "The Heidi Chronicles," Elise Bryant - what can we say? She was a hoot! Danny Gurwin brought out the comedy and the seriousness in the role of Peter the gay pediatrician, earning our sympathy androur respect. In "Quilt," Ronit Mitzner was hilari- ous and heart-warming as Karen, the well-meaning klutz who is trying des- perately to make a quilt panel for her friend. John Halmi and Brooke Ferris were an adorable uncle and little niece (respectively), and their duet, "I Be- lieve In You" was equally charming. Best Performance in a MUSKET production: Jonathan B.
