14 - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, April 14, 1994 4n.. . SOFTBALL Continued from page 10 "In the first game, we had a zillion opportunities," Hutchins said. "We just didn't get the big hit." In the second game, the story was the same, but the Wolverines weren't as fortunate. Michigan pitcher Kelly Holmes (8-9) allowed only two runs on four hits, but Michigan lost, 2-0. The Eagles' Melissa Droulliard (6-6) got the win. "I'm disappointed," Hutchins said. "But Eastern's an awful good team. We're playing well, but (when) you don'tget some big hits, you're not going to win the game, and that's what happened." Eagles coach Connie Miner was frustrated too, but respected both teams' efforts. "It would have been nice to take two," Miner said. "But I think we both (played) pretty good games." After this break from conference play, the Wolverines continue their quest for a third straight Big Ten title when they head to Penn State for games tomorrow and Saturday. Wolverine hitters hope weather is on their side today against Eastern Smith By RYAN WHITE { DAILY BASEBALL WRITER It's the game that just won't go away.' The Michigan baseball team (7-5 Big Ten, 13-15 overall) will attempt to play Eastern Michigan for the third time this season today at 3 p.m. at Fisher Stadium - weather permit- ting. Their first two tries have-not been very successful. On April 5, Michigan led 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when a light drizzle turned into a downpour. After an hour and a half delay, the rain forced the game's cancellatioi. The second attempt came Tues- day. However, Michigan was forced to make up a Big Ten doubleheader at Penn State Monday, cancelling try No. 2. Of course, it would not have mattered because it rained anyway. The third attempt comes today. Ray Ricken (4-3, 3.08 ERA) gets the start for the Wolverines, and Michigan coach Bill Freehan plans on using a pitcher an inning for the rest of the game. It is a strategy that Freehan employed last week against Oakland in order to give all his pitch- ers some game work. The Wolverines' pitching staff, faces an Eagle team which is batting .251. The Eastern lineup boasts two hitters with averages over .300. Don DeDonatis is hitting .309, and Curtis Baker leads the team with an average of .328. Centerfielder Brian Simmons leads Michigan at the plate. Thus far, he is hitting .359 with 19 RBI and two home runs. Four other Wolverines are also hitting over .300 - Scott Niemiec (.339), Scott Weaver (.337), Ryan Van Oeveren (.326) and Chad Chapman (.304). The Eagles come into Fisher Sta- dium on the heels of a doubleheader, yesterday at Toledo. Michigan hasn't. played since it split a pair of games against Penn State Monday. RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY: It is begin- ning to look like Michigan's biggest opposition isn't the opposing team, but the weather. The Wolverines have been strug- gling to get games in. Because of last week's bad weather, Michigan sched- uled an impromptu game against Oak-O land. Wednesday, the Wolverines had their eighth game of the season post- poned due to the weather. Michigan's contest against Notre Dame fell vic- tim to the rainy conditions. WINTERS RETURNs: Add another seat in the bullpen. After taking a week off at the end of spring football, sophomore pitcher* Chuck Winters returns to the Wolver- ine baseball squad this Monday. "I came to a few of the games and I wanted to go out there and runaround," Winters said. "It was tough watching, knowing I should be out there." Winters appeared in four games last season, all during the Wolver- ines' spring trip. His season was cut short when he broke a finger during- spring football drills.
