It also allows Sharp to swim his top events. "He brings a lot in the sprints," Sharp said. "I can go back to what I am best at - the 200 back, and 200 and 400 IMs. He and Lancaster can help us beat Stanford in the medley relays. Derya will add a lot in the 100 back, too." The signing of Buyukuncu repre- sents somewhat of a coup for the Wolverines. Urbanchek snagged him away from California as well as from perennial swimming power and 1994 national champion, Stanford. "The final decision was his, al- though I encouraged him to visit Michigan," Salo said. "His sole intent when he came to America was to go to Stanford. I told him it was in his best interests to explore Michigan." With the signings of Buyukuncu and Lancaster, in addition to the Cardinal's loss of the highest scoring class in NCAA history, Michigan looks to be in good shape for next year's national meet. In fact, the team has already started talking about the possibilities. Sharp says the team knows it has a good chance to win it all. "We're right in there; it kind of gives you chills down your back," Sharp said. "If everyone trains hard and comes back in shape, we can do it. People need to move up places, and maybe some others can make the meet for the first time. You never know how close it can be. We just had the (annual) banquet, and (the national championship) was one thing that was talked about." Buyukuncu also holds the national high school record in the 100-yard backstroke. However, his old record may not last for long. California postseason competition is set for May 14, and Salo believes that his swim- mer has a great chance of breaking his own record. "I consider the record in great jeop- ardy," Salo said. "It's just a matter of how far under he can go. It will put some pressure on Jon to get him to go faster next season."
