tors.
"There's several men to choose
from, but there haven't been enough
women (candidates) all along," said
Asho Craine of Ann Arbor, who gave
$500 to Pollack's campaign.
Romney's foremost opponent is
Spencer Abraham, former chair of
the state Republican Party, has raised
more than twice as much as she.
But some political observers be-
lieve Romney may have a good shot
at winning the primary.
"There seem to be some great con-
cerns among the Republican elite in
the state about how good a candidate
Spencer Abraham would make," said
Michael Traugott, program director
in the Center for Political Studies.
"Some people see him as not a good
campaigner."
The candidate with the most
money on hand is U.S. Rep. Bob Carr
(D-East Lansing). A nine-term in-
cumbent, Carrhas amassed a$445,000
campaign warchest, according to his
last financial status report.
Carr's main advantages are his

name-recognition and "his access to
Washington money," Traugott said.
"The secret to the primary is to
develop name-recognition first, which
is usually more affordable through
advertising than through travel."
Although Romney attacks Carr as
a "career politician," Carr's press sec-
retary, Marsha McVicker, said his
Washington experience "gives him a
leg up on the competition."
"He can hit the ground running -
no one else can," McVicker said.
"He's the only one who can start
delivering for the people of Michigan
on day one."
As chair of the House Transporta-
tion Appropriations Subcommittee,
Carr has created 16,000 jobs, mostly
in transportation and job-training,
McVicker said. His Senate campaign
emphasizes job creation and tough
crime legislation against repeat of-
fenders.
Still, most Michigan voters have
not yet decided for whom they will
vote. A survey released last month by
the newsletter Inside Michigan Politics

found 65 percent of voters undecided.
Twelve percent said they would
vote for Carr. Macomb County Pros-
ecutor Carl Marlinga and state Sen.
John Kelly each received 7 percent,
and Pollack got 6 percent. The survey
of 800 voters had a 4 percent margin
of error.
Federal election records also show:
Pollack and Romney each re-
ceived 82 percent of their individual
contributions from people in Michi-
gan. Former U.S. Rep. William
Brodhead had 84 percent and
Abraham had 86 percent. Ninety-eight
percent of Marlinga's contributions
came from in-state. Jon Coon, Gil
DiNello and Gary MacCagnone drew
all of their individual support from
within Michigan, but they reported
16 contributions combined.
People who contributed $1,000
- the maximum amount allowed -
made up 57 percent of Abraham's
total receipts. Brodhead had 48 per-
cent, Marlinga had 45 percent, Rom-
ney had 38 percent and Pollack had
25 percent.

These figures show the five candidates with the most cash on
hand as of the end of last year in the Michigan race for U.S.
Senate.
