Women g By REBECCA MOATZ AILY SPORTS WRITER ; In an attempt to erase the memory f a disappointing finish at the Snow- bird Tournament at the end of March, the Michigan women's golf team en- tered last weekend's competition with more confidence. But, participating in the Indiana Women's Invitational, the Wolverines finished 15th out of 18 teams, beating only Big Ten foes Purdue and North- western. Wisconsin won the tournament, held at the IU Golf Course, with a total 949 strokes in the 54-hole event, 63, strokes ahead of Michigan. The Wolverines' first-day perfor- mance placed them 16th after two rounds with a score of 341 in the first round, and 333 in the second. Sopho- more Shannon McDonald led the team * through the first day, carding a 153 on the par-71course,just six strokes out of first place. ilfers finish 15th at I1 By CHARLIE BREITROSE DAILY SPORTS WRITER Members of the Michigan men's swimming team built on the success they had at the NCAA Champion- ships to capture six titles at the Phillips 66 National Swimming Champion- ships last weekend. Freshman Tom Dolan came away from Federal Way, Wash., with four national titles and an American record in the 400 IM. His effort marked the most titles won by a male at the Nation- als since Mark Spitz won four in 1972. Swimming for his club team, Curl- Burke, Dolan won the 400-meter, 800- meter and 1500-meter freestyles, as well as the 400 individual medley. His time in the 400 IM (4:13.52) beat the old American record by almost a full second. After a good morning swim, Dolan knew he had a chance at the record. "I was only .80 off in the morning," Dolan said. "I went real hard in the morning, so I wasn't sure what I could do at night. Going in to the breaststroke, (during my night swim), I knew I had a shot to break it. The crowd was really behind me, helping me out. That gotmy adrenaline going." Ironically, Dolan beat ex-Wol- verine Eric Namesnik, who placed fifth in the same event. But Namesnik is looking down the road for his best performances. "Eric (Namesnik) swam through this meet unshaved and unprepared so that's why he was not up to par," Michigan swim coach Jon Urbanchek said. "His goals are for the World Championships." Urbanchek said he thinks Dolan has a shot at the world record in the 400 IM this September in Rome, Italy, the site of the FNA World Championships. Junior Gustavo Borges won the other two titles claimed by Michigan swimmers. The Brazilian won the 100 and 200 freestyles in times of 49.60 and 1:50.14, respectively. The Phillips 66 meet was the quali- fying meet for the Goodwill Games, which will be held this July in St. Petersburg, Russia. Although junior Steven West placed second in the 200 breaststroke, he was the fastest Ameri- can, and thus qualified for the Good- will team. "Steven West getting second in the 200 breast was outstanding," Urbanchek said. "Earning a spot on (the team) for Goodwill Games was a big achievement." Dolan said he will not go to the Goodwill Games in order to concen- trate on the World Championships trials, which will be held in India- napolis this August. Two WOLVERINES QUALIFY FOR DIV- ING NATIONALS: Senior Eric Lesser and junior Abel Sanchez qualified for the U.S. Diving Nationals last weekend as well. Lesser will compete in the 10- meter platform event and Sanchez in the one-meter springboard at the Na- tionals in Minneapolis in two weeks. from staff reports Michigan women's basketball coach Trish Roberts was issued a one-game suspension by the Big Ten Conference yesterday after published remarks she made following the Wolverines' game against Ohio State Feb. 20. "This situation with Trish is being handled in accordance with the Big Ten Conference's unsportslike conduct policy regarding comments made about game officials," Michi- gan Associate Athletic Director Peggy Bradley-Doppes said. The second day of play brought harsh weather conditions, with rain, snow and cold breezes hindering the golfers. However, the Wolverines did not let the wintry conditions affect their golfing as the team carded a 338 com- bined score for the final 18 holes of the tournament, giving it a final score of 1,012. McDonald continued topaceMichi- gan, hitting an 86 in the third round for a three-day total of 239, 16 strokes behind tournament champion Holly Reynolds of Kansas. McDonald fin- ished 12th overall. "Our short games weren't good, we didn't putt and chip well," Michi- gan coach Kathy Teichert said. "I thought the second round would be better." In what may have been the biggest surprise of the Wolverines' play, jun- ior Jenny Zimmerman moved from 80th on the first day to 59th on the second, posting the sixth lowest score of the day (79). "She came around and hit really well," Teichert said of Zimmerman. "Her chip and putt were good on the first day and her confidence in- creased on the second. It all came together." With the team playing qualifying rounds for this weekend's USF Spring Invitational Monday and today, the Wolverines will have less time to See GOLF, Page 10 p WING IT!
