Elektra/China The Levellers latest, simply en- titled "Levellers," opens with "Warn- ing," which, with its almost overbear- ing horn lines and keyboard gran- deur, sounds almost Rush-like. As the record progresses, however, that illusion is lost as the band whips through "Is This Art," which, with its chorus of "Isn't nature wonderful" conjures visions of the Hothouse Flowers and "Dirty Davy," which dis- plays a definite Pogues influence. The band has a vision and half of that vision is apparently to take their favorite musicians, incorporate their sound, and spit them back out with as much energy and vitality as possible. The other half is more social in nature as the Levellers name-drop Exxon and sing of "Crack babies born too young / And L.A. kids who dance to the gun." Fortunately, they also have an ear for the requisite catchy riffs and anthemic choruses that lend their songs a personality of their own or they would risk coming off as little more than a Celtic Midnight Oil. It may not be the best record the Levellers are capable of, but it is an inch or two above most of the useless whining coming out of Britain. - Dirk Schulze Meat Beat Manifesto Peel Sessions Strange Fruit Every once in a great while, one of these Peel Session records comes along that's actually worth the enor- mous price tag, and, not surprisingly, the latest of these rarities comes from dance music deconstructionists Meat Beat Manifesto. This four-song EP kicks things off with a new track, "Fire Number 9," which some fans will recognize as the explosive noise-stomp that kicked off last year's live shows. This track finds Meat Beat returning to the harsher sounds of their earlier tracks such as "I Got The Fear" from "Storm The Studio," but the layers of druggy samples are still similar to their direc- tion on "Satyricon." Next up is "Soul Driver," another song that the band premiered on the second leg of their tour. This track's purely psychedelic, 90 beats-per- minute shuffle is highly reminiscent of the band's last single, "Mindstream," after taking some heavy depressants. The EP rounds out with reworked versions of the supremely bass-heavy "Drop" and their earlier club hit, "Ra- dio Babylon," both of which are spruced up with some terrific live drumming and a heavy dose of remix- ing, one of Meat Beat's Jack Dan- gers' favorite hobbies. Unlike most Peel Sessions records, this one is not just for collectors and completists. Instead, it bursts forth with some of the best tracks this band has ever recorded. - Andy Dolan to warrant purchase. - Dustin Howes i IG 111'1.L1 A S] AN H''L TREYU I. ______________________________________________________ & I I * CASH FOR COLLEGE. 900,000 grants available.
