AFGHAN WHIGs Some say "Gentlemen" is a masterpiece, a brutally frank song cycle about the modern male psyche. Some say Greg Dulli and the gang are full of horseshit. Read the article on Page 3, listen to the record, see the show and make up your own mind. At St. Andrew's Hall. CROWDED HOUSE & SHERYL CROW Damn it! If Crowded House isn't the most underrated pop band in all of pop music, we don't know who is. Neil Finn is a beautiful, sublime songwriter with hooks and melodies better than anything McCartney has come up with since "Band on the Run." Sheryl Crow is also a divine songwriter, with wonderful lyrics that match her R&B-influenced rock. They're at the State Theatre, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 and $19.50 in advance, for listeners of all ages. Yeah, it's expensive but the music is splendid. UTAH PHILuPS He's kooky. He's folk. And he ran for President on the "Sloth and Indolence" ticket; no joke. He's coming to the Ark for an 8 p.m. show. Tickets are $10.75. You make the call. ANTON WEBERN - FURTHER FES A multi-media show celebrating the music of the 20th Century Composer Anton Webern in all of his brilliant glory. THE MAYTRICKS All right, they've gone unheard long enough - it's time that Ann Arbor's best local band gets the attention they deserve. "So Chewy," the group's latest album, is a quirky power-pop bonanza full of undeniable hooks and melodies - it's great. So, head down to the cozy Half-Way Inn in East Quad at 9:30 and hear their sweet pop delights. Besides, it's free so there is no reason at all not to go. F R I D A Y MELISSA FERRICK Don't pigeonhole her as a folkie or as just another female singer-songwriter; Melissa Ferrick is just a damn good songwriter and since it's free, you have no reason not to go. Not only was "Exile in Guyville" the best album of 1993, it was the best album of the century! OK, maybe that' s overstating it a little bit, but Phair's songs are sublimely crafted gems that grow better on each listen. We've listened to the record over 100 times (and we're not exaggerating) and we're not sick of it yet. So go see her, 'cause she's the best. At St. Andrew's Hall; tickets are $8.50 in advance; doors open at 9 p.m. AUSTIN LOUNGE LIZARDS Yes, there's a high probability from some full frontal floral shirtage. They're doin' that swing thing, with a touch of bluegrass. Tickets are $8.75; the show starts at 8 p.m. at the Ark. MARY JANE'S THRASH BASH An evening of all-female hardcore cacophony from Whiptail and Inside Out. Come on feel the noise at the Blind Pig. Doors open an 9:30 p.m. LI.'
