Pavement Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain Matador Records Pavement, like many other worthwhile "alternative" acts such as Urge Overkill, Liz Phair, Dinosaur Jr. and Redd Kross, deconstruct the music of the past, reshaping it to create new forms of self-expression as well as the music of the future. "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain," Pavement's new album, is a perfect example of this trend; there's a definite classic rock vibe to the spacious production and to the sound of the album, which sonically alludes to such greats as Neil Young, Steely Dan, The Allman Brothers and The Band to name a few, but these influences paradoxically sound fresh and innovative when in the hands of this band, which is truly experimental at heart. What is really remarkable about Pavement and "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" is the expressive use of rhythm in each song, and how the album sounds drenched in sunlight. "Silence Kid" is stuttering and poetic, while "Ell Less Two" is smoothly self-assured. "Cut Your, Hair," the single, is the epitome of the "pop gem" - impossibly catchy and endlessly listenable. But since this is a Pavement song, behind the cuteness is plenty of substance. "Darlin' don't you go and cut your hair/do you think it's gonna make him change?" the song begins, seemingly about a failed relationship. But the focus quickly changes to the band itself-- the lyric "the second drummer drowned" is about the band's ex-drummer Gary Young - and switches finally to the importance of image to bands in general; "no BIG HAIR!" singer Stephen Malkmus exhorts. The rest of the album ranges from the shambling "Newark Wilder" to the sudden outbursts of "Unfair" to the folky "Range Life." The tribute to jazz pianist Dave Brubeck "5-4 = Unity" is appropriately jazzy and spacy, while "Unfair" and "Hit the Plane Down" are loud, distorted experimental pieces that could have been on Pavement's debut "Slanted and Enchanted," or their singles collection "Westing (by Musket and Sextant)." "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain," though much mellower than the band's previous output, is sonically dense at a concise 42 minutes, and one of the first necessary albums of the year. The single for the aforementioned "Cut Your Hair" is pretty cool too, with an R.E.M. cover, "Camera," which also sounds like a lost track from "Slanted and Enchanted," and and another song, "Stare," which is hushed and meandering. Paradoxical and essential, Pavement consistently improve with each release and continually change the face of music. Perfect sound forever! - Heather Phares NRBQ Message for the Mess Age Forward/Rhino In order to fully appreciate NRBQ, you have to know a lot of music, and know it well. You have to know rock, country, blues, traditional pop, jazz, rockabilly, R&B, and whatever else they are listening to at the moment. And then you might be able to appreciate the goofy genre-hopping that the Q has been doing for almost, oh, 30 years now. And in all that time, they have never had anything even close to a hit, and they never will. It isn't because NRBQ is a bad band. Quite the opposite, actually. NRBQ is a great band, capable of playing anything and playing it well. And they don't take anything too seriously. Their virtuousity is there to, serve love songs to Howard Johnson's, "Wacky Tobacky," cars, air- conditioning, "RC Cola & A Moon Pie," band members and, on this album, "Girl Scout Cookies." Taken together, their unassuming yet rich musicality and utter goofy humor work against the band gathering a wider audience. Music critics and fanatical record collectors will always love NRBQ because they get the musical in-jokes and they delight in the (sometimes)ingratiating wacky humor of counting off every bar in a "12 Bar Blues." Yes, I do love NRBQ - I'm both a critic and a fanatical record collector. And "Message for the Mess Age" is their best studio album since at least "At Yankee Stadium," and quite possibly ever. Not that it sounds all that different from any other NRBQ record- it just has better songs. So if you know and love the Q, rush out and get this one. If you don't, give 'em try with the 2-CD collection, "Peek-A- Boo," which collects basically every great thing they've ever recorded. Better yet, go see them live, where they absolutely shine. Afterall, they're the world's greatest bar band and the best bar bands never really quite capture that magic on record. - Tom Erlewine * SANDI'S WORD PRO: "Resumes"-PhD- Theses-Law-Papers-Tapes-FAX-Rush. 426- --5217.
