the size of the list."
But another internal memo sent to
Virginia Nordby, then-director of the
Office of Affirmative Action, said
that the regents had already decided
to cut the list to 27.
The 15 members of the faculty
committee hoped their concerns
would fall on sympathetic ears,
especially with interim President
Robben Fleming.
"I will see if there is some way that
(Fleming) can assist in getting the list
cut down. I will talk to Fleming, and
also to Regents Roach, Baker and
Brown, and will do it in a way to
suggest that we have a mutiny on our
hands and that the delays and the long
list appear to us to be leading to slide us
into an internal candidate."
Another member added, "We do
not want to be party to rubber-stamping
a choice that is a choice of necessity."
The members felt that continued
delay on the regents would force the
selection of an internal candidate.
"Presidential searches are under-
way at anumber ofother schools. There
is a danger that candidates in whom
we have an interest might commit
themselves to another institution,"
Kauper said in a Feb. 10 memo to the
regents. At the time both Gregorian
and Walter Massey, vice president for
research at the University of
Chicago, were in the hunt for the presi-
dency at Brown, which Gregorian ulti-
mately won.
Roach responded to the apparent
foot-dragging. "The regents were not
able to do that because of strongly
held views, more dealing with inclu-
sion than exclusion," Roach said.
"We will sacrifice efficiency to
maintain secrecy,"Roach told the mem-
bers of the faculty committee. "We
may be wrong, butwe feel thatsecrecy
is the No. 1 issue."
After receiving lists ofprospective
candidates by the three advisory com-
mittees, the regents made five cuts in
paring the list down to five finalists.
The 15 members on the faculty
committee selected University of Penn-
sylvania President Sheldon Hackney
as their top pick. Paul Gray, president
of the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, was second and
Duderstadt followed third. Gregorian,
president of the New York Public
Library was near the bottom of the
list.The committee members consid-
ered academic excellence and reputa-
tion in ranking the candidates.
Midway through, the regents
brought in outside consultant, Lamalie
Associates Inc., on the recommenda-
tion of the faculty advisory committee,
to gather information on the candidates
but not to participate in the search.
Although the members on the fac-
ulty committee were divided on
Duderstadt, he remained on the list. He
was the top internal candidates. On
the list of 31 candidates prepared by
the student committee, Duderstadt was
noticeably absent.
In a consensus list compiled from
the three advisory committees, four in-
ternalcandidatesremained: Duderstadt;
Homer A. Neal, chair of the department
of physics; Charles M. Vest, dean of the
College of Engineering; and Gilbert R.
Whitaker, dean of the School of Busi-
ness Administration.
Because of concern with the
underrepresentation of minorities on
the consensus list, Massey, who had
been previously cut, was put back on
the list by the regents..
The regents winnowed the list of
about 30 consensus candidates down
to five finalists after a number of tele-
phone interviews asking the candi-
dates whether they wanted to be
considered and if they wanted their
names to remain confidential.
The top five finalists were:
Gregorian, Massey, Duderstadt,
James Miller, director of the U.S.
Office of Management and Budget,
and Steven Sample, president of the
State University of New York-
Buffalo. After interviews with the
five candidates, Sample and Miller
withdrew from the race.
Brown said he does not remember
Massey formally withdrawing.
The two remaining candidates
were Duderstadt and Gregorian. After
Baker's call, which prompted
Gregorian to withdraw, Duderstadt
remained as the sole candidate.
Brown and Roach met with
Duderstadt on June 8 to deliver the
news. Duderstadt was asked if he
would accept the job it it were offered,
Brown said.
Two days later, the four regents
on the nominating committee publicly
announced its nomination of
Duderstadt. Less than two hours later
in an open meeting, Duderstadt was
elected the 1Ith University president.

Consensus List
On Feb. 22, 1988, the three lists compiled by the advisory
committees are submitted to the regents. In private discussions
with the other regents, Brown creates a consensus list. Candidates
on this list were contacted and asked whether they wanted to be
considered-only 12 candidates remained after initial "screening'
by the regents.
