By MICHAEL THOMPSON Oh, what a wonderful night at the Oscars. Everyone was there dressed to kill or be killed. People laughed and cried along with the millions watching. And no one tried to make any inept political statements. Instead of painful politics we got an annoying number by Bernadette Peters along with people trying to dance ballet to the music of "The Fugitive." No Richard Gere spouting on about sending happy thoughts, in- stead we get the wacky Christian Slater who was quite literally just happy to be there. And of course the real question was Whoopi Goldberg, could she re- place Billy Crystal? Just think about the stupidity of that question and you have your answer. What more can you ask of Holly- wood? We had lots of flash and a little class. Thank god it's over. But onto the real importance. Best supporting actor. In a night filled with almost no upsets, this one was already in the bag even if it was somewhat of a disappointment. Tommy Lee Jones was great, but Ralph Fiennes was so much more powerful. And Jones wouldn't have so easily snagged this one if he had been given his just rewards two years ago when he was nominated for "JFK." But "The Fugitive" was a nice, safe picture, so the man pretending to be the president of the Hair Club for Men wins the first in what should be many awards. For this critic, best supporting ac- tress was the biggest surprise. Winona seemed a sure bet even if she did almost nothing in "The Age of Inno- cence." The only real competition was Rosie Perez for the criminally under- rated "Fearless." And perhaps that's where the split came that allowed Anna Paquin to sneak off with the Oscar while also giving the best speech of the entire night. Best actor was yet another sure bet. Hanks' performance was right on time and the perfect way for the acad- emy to nod its politically correct head. Sorry, Liam, but at least you were nominated. By the time best actress came up most of the people watching had gone to sleep. Holly Hunter's silent por- trayal of a woman caught between two men, a daughter and a piano was so secure that the other nominees must have come for the food. Then, finally the big one. Every- one knew where it should go, but no one knew if it would go to him. Granted, Jane Campion did a good job as did the other nominees, but it was really no contest. And she must have known that after she won for best screenplay that she wasn't going to get anything else. Steven Spielberg won the Acad- emy Award not only because it was time for the academy to acknowledge him, but because he had earned it. "Schindler's List" was a film where the director stepped away from his comfortable usual and showed us all that he was still great. "Schindler's List" had to win for best picture just as Spielberg had to win for best director. The movie was great and far beyond all the other nominees. Granted many people will say that the guilt factor had a lot to do with it, and maybe'so, but the film is still great, regardless. So another year passes and we see that Whoopi Goldberg can actually hold her own in front of Hollywood's finest. Yes, some of the comments were stupid, but so were the nomina- tions. "Cliffhanger" for three differ- ent awards? And how did Janet Jack- son get up on stage? The biggest blunder, however, came from Kirk Douglas who forgot to mention the last nominee for best cinematography. This moment basi- cally summed up the Oscars for what they are -a long wait for someone to officially announce what we all al- ready know. Whoopi might have pulled their fat out of the fire if she hadn't had so much trouble pronounc- ing the title "Searching for Bobby Fischer." It was Spielberg's year and deservingly so. His two films com- bined captured ten Oscars. All one can really think is what's next? Oh, what a night at the Oscars. * "w EK IIZ Thursdays in the Daily JOE PESCI - CHRISTIAN SLATER Professional Dry Cleaning College Cleaners 715 N. University 662-1906 Eureka Cleaners I 308 N.
