Having experienced most of the
trials and tribulations of the college
student, sometimes it's nice to look
back on the utter despair that was high
school angst and chuckle at teenage
naivete.

pirate radio broadcaster.
Under the name "Happy Harry
Hard-on," a take-off on the initials of
his high school, Hubert Humphrey
High, Marc rambles on about teen
angst and the unfairness of the system,
interspersed with kick-ass music (the
soundtrack from this film is worth a
listen, as well).
The rest of the plot is pedantic,
dealing with the high school principal
(read: villain) and her fanaticism about
SAT scores, plus Marc's inability to
talk to girls which is solved when he
meets Nora, played by Samantha
Mathis. Nora is of the art-school skin,

years ago.
For those uninitiated few who
missed this classic when it first graced
the silver screen, "Pump Up The
Volume" stars Christian Slater in all
his sneering glory as Marc Stevens,
your typical American teenager (of
indeterminate age, however, kind of
like the casting of twenty-somethings
as high school students in "Beverly
Hills 90210") who's parents move
from "back east" to a small town in
Arizona.
Marc's parents - ex-hippies who
have become part of the
"establishment" since Marc's dad is
now a school superintendent - buy
him a radio set so he can talk to his
friends back home (Apparently a

extremely
realistic, and
extremely
annoying.
Marc is a
toned-down
version of
a n o t h e r
Christian
Slater role,
Jason Dean in
the film
"Heathers."
But where
was nihilistic
as well as
cynical,"Pump
Up The
Volume"
offers a light at
the end of the
tunnel. A pretty pathetic, unrealistic
kind of light, like the feeling you get
at the end of a movie like "The Mighty
Ducks" (all heart-warmed and shit),
but a solution nonetheless.
"Pump Up the Volume" tries its
best to be cynical, but it falls short,
inspiring its viewers with the
unfortunately naive belief that a
million teenagers with pirate radio
stations could make a difference in
modern America.
It makes you wish they'd have
decided mass suicide was a better
answer and tried to blow up the school,
but that was saved for another film.
PUMP UP THE VOLUME is
