The Michigan DaIly - Monday, March 14. 1994 - 7 Various Artists "The Acid Jazz Test Part I" is a The Acid Jazz Test Moonshine Music Acid Jazz is a hybridization of jazz, techno, soul and rap, which when mixed together correctly, raises all of the included musical genres to an unexpected level. Not concerned with pleasing any one musical form, Acid Jazz juxtaposes differing musical genres and creates a music that can be as complex as it is danceable. collection that gives a fairly representative view of what American Acid Jazz is. Differing from its British counterpart, American Acid Jazz is more rap and soul oriented, hence making it more accessible to an American dance crowd. Acid Jazz's influences can be seen in many rap groups such as Tribe Called Quest, US3 and Digable Planets. "All I Need" by Jhelisa successfully combines danceable beats with a positive theme, while not sacrificing either. The combination on this song of vibraphone, piano, flute and drum beats creates a sound that could only happen in Acid Jazz. Unfortunately, some of the other experiments do not work as well. "A Headnaddas Journey to the Planet Adidi-skizm" is a run-on sentence that goes nowhere. "Kiss Like a Frenchman" is flat out ridiculous and "Never Give Up" sounds like a Soul II Soul cover, which may appeal to some, butis outof placeon this album. Even though some of the experiments went sour, the strength of the majority of the songs makes this album more than a worthy purchase. Not only is it a sampling of American Acid Jazz, "The Acid Jazz Test" is a very danceable album that takes some risks, and comes out ahead. - Ben Ewy KRONOS Continued from page 5 help when they performed her Quartet No. 4, and the piece did not come off as well as it could have. The works by Raymond Scott were by far the best pieces on the program. Scott arranged for Kronos threeshort pieces entitled "Dinner Music for A Pack of Hungry Cannibals," "Powerhouse" and "Twilight in. Turkey." Scott's use of musical quotations as subtle humor brought a chuckle to the audience. All of these brief but momentous pieces brought life into the concert. "Mach." a work by John Oswald, was more of a humorous statement than a work to be analyzed. His technique of audioquoting w as used extensively. The combination of rock music with a string quartet was funny but had no other notable qualities. Despite its shortcomings, the concert was a success and the audience enjoyed themselves. It was great to see so many young people on Saturday night and it is important to appreciate Kronos' effort to increase classical music awareness. .CLASSIFIED ADS 764-0557 . . . . . .::": : : :.E:.::. .
