4 - The Michigan Daily - Weekend etc. - -Thursday, March 10, 1994 Eat, drink and see movies: yeah, what else is there to do in A By ALEXANDRA TWIN Maybe I'm spoiled. So what? I'm from New York and I like New York and I like the things that you can do in New York. Maybe I'm just ignorant to the plethora of opportunities that are Ann Arbor, but as far as my little first-yeareyes can see, it would appear that there are basically three things to do here on the weekend. 1) drink 2) eat 3) see a movie or play or do something cultured like seeing a movie or play. #1 Drinking. Being that I am not 21 and that most people whom I know are not 21, attempting to drink presents something of a problem. Yes, it is possible to find someone old enough to "buy" for you or to just go somewhere where alcohol is available, but this puts you in a position where you are dependent on somebody else to ensure your only potential good time. This can suck, because if they flake out, the only thing you can do is go eat. Which brings me to my second point. Food, or the lack of it. Some friends and I went to Palio's on Main St. Friday night. Not only was the food really good, but it had probably been prepared sometime recently. Why should that factor be shocking? Well, because we all live in dorms. Being that I have a very glamorous job as a West Quad cafeteria employee, I know the inside scoop, I feel that it is my duty to inform you that dorm food sucks. Apparently others have realized this, too. The result of which is that everybody, at least everybody in West (and probably South, too) spends a good deal of their time and entr6e plus accounts in the Union. Yes, the Mug. Kind of a fantasy and a nightmare all rolled up into one, wouldn't you say? Yeah, the fact that you can save your Subway cup and keep refilling it for days is pretty cool, butdoes anyone go to that Wok place? Better yet, does anyone know of anyone who's ever gone there? 'Cause as far as I can tell, nobody goes there. And another thing, have you ever seen them cooking anything? I haven't. I'm at The Mug nearly every day and I'm telling you, they don't cook. So, let's put this together now: a) nobody buys their food b) there's always food there c) they don't seem to be cooking, yet d) they're always stirring . MMM. Sounds good. Gonna go get me some of that Beef Teriyaki right now, hope the year is good. And what's with all the caf6's on The Fifth Annua Pre-Med Students' Symposiumi 'Being a Part of the Changing Medical Profession" Featuring Keynote Speaker Dr. Susan Hershberg Adleman Saturday, March 12, 1994 10.:0 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Michigan Union State Street closing at midnight? Don't they have any self-respect? That's the prime coffee hour. Everybody knows that. In New York, some caf6's don't even open 'til midnight. (O.K., that's actually not true, but what do you know? You've never even been there, I could tell you anything.) #3 Culture. Well, that's movies. Oh, and plays, too, I guess, 'but I haven't really been to any here. Although I did think about going to Pioneer High School's rousing rendition of "Wait Until Dark" until it suddenly occurred to me that a) I don't have a car b) this is Pioneer High School, exactly how rousing a rendition could it be? Oh, give me a break. I told you already, I'm spoiled and I'm from New York. Once you've seen Broadway, there's not much that Pioneer High School can do, even if the sets are really good. When I went home for Christmas, I made sure to stock up on all the independent-oriented films that I could find. Why? Well, partly so that Marty's 'Temp VIDEO Continued from page 3 Keitel, Barbara Hershey and David Bowie. The one element of the film which managed to succeed and survive the years is Peter Gabriel's score. I could taunt my fellow film writers here at the Daily, since none of them are from New York and partly because I knew that if I didn't see the films then, I wasn't going to be seeing them anytime soon. "Farewell My Concubine" made it here, but where's "Naked"? And what about "The Trial," "Faraway,@ So Close," and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape"? That one even has heartland heartthrob Johnny Depp in it and it's still not playing here. Oh, well. Complain, complain. At least there's a film festival here this weekend. Maybe after that, we can all go find some caf6 that's still open and sit and contemplate the likelihood of kidnapping anyone 21 and over by next weekend. Or on second thought, why don't we just skip the caf6? We can all ice- skate back to my dorm for a little late- night snack, instead. Espresso Royale? The Mug's open 'til one. I've got a Subway cup and an entree plus account, what more could anyone ask for? itaionrevisited categorization for the album. The score, titled "Passion," as it is marketed in retail record stores is a sometimes cacophonic, oftentimes richly somber work featuring instruments and performers from North Africa and the Middle East. Unfortunately, the score is the easier to find than the entire visual text. "The Last Temptation of Christ" suffered a strong, yet misguided blow from the ultra-conservative fundamentalist community hypnotized into an ignorant state by the misinformed diatribes of Pat Robertson, the Moral Majority, the ghost of Joseph McCarthy and whoever else led the attack against; this film. "The Last Temptation of Christ" is not revisionist history. It is an affirmation of the divinity of Christ and a visualization of each individual's repressed religious struggle packaged in a thought- provoking, accessible and breathtaking work of art. In our lifetime it has become the Christian version of "The Satanic Verses" (short of Marty's head being on some S Southern preacher's chopping block the way Salman Rushdie's is on the Ayatollah's). It is damn near time it started to get some consideration for the technical and conceptual watermark it is. THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST is available at Liberty Street and Campus Video.
