By TOM SEELEY DAILY SPORTS WRITER The future is looking good. One of the best recruiting classes the Michigan track program has had in years made its presence known at Saturday's intrasquad meet. The meet, which is the traditional opener of the indoor season, saw freshmen place in one of the top two spots in seven of the day's 10 events. Two freshmen who really shined were Kevin Sullivan, who won the 800 meters and Neil Gardner, who took first in both the 55-meter sprint and the 55-meter hurdles. Sullivan, coming off of a phenomenal cross country season in which he led the team to a Big Ten champion- ship, registered a 1:50.0 in the 800 meters. He followed up that performance by running a personal best in the mile relay later in the afternoon. "I was really pleased with my performance," Sullivan said. "My time in the 800 was the fastest I've ever opened a season." Gardner won the sprint with a time of 6.4 seconds and came back to capture the hurdles with a time of 7.5 seconds. Michigan coach Jack Harvey knows it is only the beginning of the season but was impressed with the perfor- mance of his young squad. "Some of the guys aren't in top shape yet," Harvey said. "But by and large we were pretty pleased with the results." By BRIAN SKLAR and DOUG STEVENS DAILY SPORTS WRITERS Before this season, the Michigan women's track and field team vowed to improve upon last season's third- place finish in the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Their fine performance Saturday in a home intrasquad meet indicated they are leading to that goal. Going into this season with a conference title in cross WOME country already under their belt, the distance runners know they will play a key role throughout the drive for a Big Ten championship. One runner who showed she hasn't lost a step is Molly McClimon. McClimon, the defending Big Ten champion in the 5,000 meters and All-American in cross country, won the 3,000 meters on Saturday in impressive fashion. Also running strongly for the Wolverines in the meet was Courtney Babcock. Babcock, an All-American in cross country and third-place conference finisher in the 3,000 last spring, showed she is still one of the prominent runners in the Big Ten by winning the mile this weekend. Richelle Webb continued her excellence of last season by winning the 400 meters in addition to contributing to the victorious mile relay team. Tearza Johnson led the field in the 200 meters and also helped win the mile relay. Laura Jerman won the pentathlon and hurdled very well. WHO: Brian Wiseman TEAM: Hockey HOMETOWN: Chatham, Ont. Marcel Wouda took the top spots in the 100 breast and the 200 individual medley. The junior's time in the 200 IM (1:50.24) was an NCAA consideration time. Borges chipped in a great anchor leg in the 400 medley relay. "Gustavo Borges had a very fast leg on the medley relay," Urbanchek said. "He almost made up two body lengths on the USC swimmer (Jim Wells)." The diving events had the same results as the previous day, with the 'This has no bearing (on the rest of the season). In fact it was the third. The Trojans came to Ann Arbor for the U.S. Open in De- cember. Later that month the two teams, along with California, held winter training at the U.S. Olympic train- ing center pool in Colorado Springs, Colo. Urbanchek said the presence of the Trojans and Golden Bears con- tributed to a successful training trip. "We had two other college teams there, which made the training a little more productive," Urbanchek said. "Sometimes we combined the workouts, which made it a little more competitive. So we got better re- sults." Trivia Answer The longest unbeaten streak in CCHA history is held by Michigan State, which went 27 games without losing in 1989- 90.
