The Wolverines accomplished what they set out to do, by finishing strongly in their two California meets. "We needed to get some very strong away meet scores for our ranking aver- age to qualify for regionals," Michi- gan coach Robert Darden said. The Wolverines finished a close second to defending national cham- pion Stanford, 282.30-281.15 atCali- fornia-Berkeley Friday night. Cal, 1-313-663-2163 ® @AS UCLA and San Jose State finished in order after Michigan. Three Wolverines had very strong showings in their respective events: Bob Young placed second in the parallel bars and tied for first on the rings with Ben Verrall. Verrall also placed third on the floor. Brian Winkler also had an outstanding meet, placing first on the parallel bars and third on both the rings and the pommel horse. "Friday night was incredible,"jun- ior Rich Dopp said. "We put a scare into Stanford. With so much support, we turned the competition arena into our home gym." In the meet Saturday afternoon at Stanford, against the Cardinal and UCLA, Michigan came in second once again behind Stanford, 283.70-279.65. Verrall finished firston the rings. Dopp finished first on the floor and fifth in the all-around. Young finished fourth in the all- around. The team attributed a large part of their success to strong crowd support. "We were loud," junior Brian Winkler said. "We had alumni. We had parents and the team. We werejust up. It's what did it for us." Coach Darden said that the team's qualifying average should be high enough to get them into one of the top six berths in the region. Now they can retool some of the routines and put together a strong program for Ohio strongiy t squads State. "Now we have a chance to try to incorporate some harderskills," Verrall said. "We can test drive them because we aren't worried about qualifying for regionals." "We can rest some of the guys, Darden said. "Our focus from this point on is to do as well as we can in the Big Tens at Penn State March 25-26:x The Wolverines performance against Stanford, may help them mthe Big Ten. "Our plans now are to do some scaring in the Big Ten and maybe take it away from Ohio State," Verrall sai "It's different from last year becaus we expect everyone to hit, when they don't it's a surprise. Our previous losses were from lack of confidence but (our confidence) is back." The men's gymnastics team fMel the crowd is abig factor in theircompe- titions. Akey totheir ongoing success will be continued support. "We took their house away, and made it our house. It was pretty mu@ the key to our success," said Winkler. "We need to get more people at home meets, especially for the invitational (March 12), its going to be a great meet." The Wolverines were disappointed at the meet in Chicago, Feb. 20. It did not go as well as they had hoped; as they finished second behind Illinois- Chicago, 277.9-274.0, beating Mic gan State's score of 226.37.
