The Michigan Daily - Monday, January 10, 1994 - 7 5 U.S. senators urge end of Vietnam boycott HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - The chair and four members of a power- ful U.S. Senate committee urged President Clinton yesterday to quickly1lift the trade embargo against Vietnam and restore diplomatic re- lations after nearly 20 years. "I frankly am pretty confident that the embargo will be lifted be- cause it's the only thing to do at this time," said Sen. J. Bennett Johnston (D-La.) who chairs the Senate En- ergy and Natural Resources Com- mittee. "The march of history is in that direction. I think the president will be prepared to act quickly." Johnston said the secretary-gen- eral of Vietnam's Communist Party, Do Muoi, told the senators that "Viet- nam was very anxious to renew rela- tions with the United States, that he regards the United States as a friend, not as an enemy." The two countries broke off diplo- matic and economic relations in 1975 after communist North Vietnam de- feated the South Vietnamese govern- ment and reunified the country. "It is time to close the book on the past," Johnston told a news confer- ence attended by all seven senators. "It is time to renew and reconcile our relationship with Vietnam and move on to a new chapter. I believe that is in the interest of the United States, in the interest of the MIAs and their fami- lies, and in the interest of stability." The Senate group arrived in Hanoi Saturday on a three-day visit to assess U.S.-Vietnamese trade and diplomatic relations. They also reviewed progress and cooperation from the Hanoi gov- ernment in the accounting of 2,239 Americans listed as missing in action from the Vietnam War. MOSCOW (AP) - In their first mass protest since October's bloody clashes, thousands of hard-liners yes- terday shouted "Hang Yeltsin!" and rallied support for the Communists and ultranationalists who move into parlia- ment this week. Just three days before President Clinton arrives in Moscow for talks with Boris Yeltsin, the crowd also marched to the U.S. Embassy with red Soviet banners yelling "Fascists!" and "Yankee go home!" Several dozen police officers watched the demonstra- tion by at least 5,000 people, and no violence was re- ported. The rally had been authorized by authorities. The protest was held several hundred yards from the Russian White House, the former parliament headquar- ters and scene of some of the worst fighting in October between hard-liners and Yeltsin's forces. Yeltsin, who dissolved the old Communist-dominated parliament in September after nearly two years of political deadlock, sent tanks and troops on Oct. 4 to evict the deputies barricaded inside the White House. More than 140 people were killed in two days of street fighting. Yeltsin had hoped to form a pro-reform parliament in Dec. 12 elections, but Communistsrand ultranationalists shocked his supporters with their strong showing.
