The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, February 15, 1994 - 7 ART FOR SALE Doctor grants final wish of Canadian right-to-die activist THE WASHINGTON POST TORONTO - A 43-year-old Ca- nadian woman who turned her debili- tating illness into a crusade for the right to die, apparently has had the last word about the way her life would end. Sue Rodriguez, who in 1991 was found to have the degenerative nerve condition known as Lou Gehrig's dis- ease, died Saturday at her home in Victoria, British Columbia, according to police and Svend Robinson, a close friend and member of Parliament who has championed laws permitting phy- sician-assisted suicide. Svend said yesterday that he was with Rodriguez when a doctor he de- clined to identify arrived and carried out her wishes. Royal Canadian Mounted Police have announced an investigation into her death - and Robinson's role in it - and said an autopsy would be performed to deter- mine if she died by lethal injection. Choking back tears as he recounted the events of Saturday afternoon, Robinson told reporters that Rodriguez made her final plans a month ago. He said she had shared a last meal Friday evening with her husband and 9-year- old son, who were absent during Rodriguez's final hours the next day. "She was serene and calm through- out," Robinson said. Declaring that "the present state of the law is profoundly cruel," Robinson recalled a question Rodriguez put to a parliamentary committee two years ago: "If I cannot give consent to my own death, then whose body is this?" The death of Rodriguez is likely to stoke the national debate that was fu- eled by her campaign to end her life. Canadian anti-euthanasia laws mirror those being tested in Michigan by Jack Kevorkian, known as the "suicide doc- tor," and other right-to-die activists. The last judicial decision against Rodriguez came from the Supreme Court of Canada last September. It ruled by a vote of 5-4 that it had no power to grant her a legal assisted suicide until Parliament rewrote the pertinent laws. In a statement prepared for release after her death, Rodriguez said: "I hope that my efforts will not have been in vain and that the ministerofjustice will introduce legislation into Parliament soon so that terminally ill people have another option available...." The federal minister ofjustice, Allan Rock, said in the House of Commons yesterday that the government supports a full parliamentary review of Cana- dian euthanasia laws. Prime Minister Jean Chretien, an aide said yesterday, favors an open vote, free of party disci- pline, on any enabling legislation in- troduced in the House of Commons. Calling Rodriguez a martyr to their cause, activists inCanadaand the United States praised her single-mindedness in the face of repeated legal setbacks and physical deterioration.
