The Wolverines in one half :outplayed No. 18 Ohio State. For 20 minutes, Michigan dominated Wis- ponsin. For five minutes, they kept pace with No. 1 Penn State. And for the first 19 minutes Fri- day night, Michigan (0-7 Big Ten, 3- 13 overall) played nip-and-tuck bas- ketball with No. 4 Iowa (5-1, 12-2), only to fall, 78-56. It was 19 minutes during which the Wolverines overcame the Hawkeyes' vast strength, size and quickness. Nineteen minutes during which Michigan faced itsnemesis - the full-court press. Nineteen minutes where the Wol- verines were able to avoid foul trouble and play tough, spirited basketball. Unfortunately for Michigan, it had to play the other 21 minutes, and its fortunes were not so pleasant. Iowa took advantage of superior bench play, stamina and post play to control the second half and roll to the victory. "I think it was a very good effort on effort was the fact that Iowa coach Vivian Stringer gave her struggling starters much of the first half off in favor of a younger lineup. "Frankly, I was not satisfied with what we were doing as a staring group," said Stringer, who registered her 500th career victory. "That was one way of registering my dissatisfaction." Iowa's abridged lineup was still all over the boards and the low post area. The Hawkeyes out rebounded the Wol- verines, 22-12, while center Simone Edwards chipped in eight points. However, thanks to Michigan's best shooting half of the year (47.8 percent), it was able to stay close with the Hawkeyes. The Wolverines hit four-of-eight three-pointers, includ- ing a Jennifer Kiefer trey that tied the score at 30-30. "Even though we knew Vivian didn't start any of her regular starters, I feel like, with the depth she has on her bench, any of those kids could start," Roberts said. As in so many other contests this year, Michigan simply did not have Blue falls to fatigue, Gophers .-..J P 1 1I !TACT A RAfAldA 111 Kiefer all seven of ourkids' hearts," Michigan coach Trish Roberts said. "We came out the second half and (suffered) the problems that have hampered us all year-we don't have the depth and our team gets a little winded." The first half quickly became a battle of Michigan's ability to can outside jumpers and Iowa's knack for easy inside baskets. Significantly aiding Michigan's By L. .. 05TAM-ABADI DAILY BASKETBALL WRITER Close but no cigar, again. The Michigan women's basket- ball team fell short to Minnesota yes- terday, 79-70. The Wolverines led only once --43 seconds into the first half, 3-2. The remainder of the game Michigan trailed anywhere from one to 16 points. The Michigan offense was ignited by freshman Jennifer Kiefer, who had 17 points. All but two of Kiefer's points were from three-point range. Kiefer ended the night 5-for-8 from beyond the arc "The bright spot in today's game was Jennifer Kiefer's effort," Michi- gan coach Trish Roberts said. "I'm proud of her. To come into the Big Ten and play the way she has is just super for a freshman." Gopher coach Linda Hill- MacDonald, was not exactly thrilled with her team's effort. "Our defensive intensity was not there," Hill-MacDonald said. "We gave up too many rebounds and did not defend the three point shot at all, especially the second half." Minnesota's Carol Ann Shudlick and Crystal Flint combined for 44 of the Gopher's 79 points, with 22 points a piece. Flint's fastbreak points caused much damage for the Wolverines, in terms of turnovers. With a short roster, the Wolver- ines once again fell prey to fatigue. "Minnesota didn't beat us. We beat ourselves," Roberts said. the stamina to stay with such a de- manding team. Iowa closed out the first half with a 9-0 run and outscored the Wolverines, 39-26, in the second. It's tough. They had five people coming in, five people coming out, and we had the same seven people outthere the whole game," Kiefer said.
