Renaissance?

. Along a short strip of East Jef-
ferson Avenue, the relics of a past era
can be found. This area thrived during
the times when Detroit was a major
industrial producer. Now all that is
left are the fire-gutted shells of build-
ings that once housed and fed the
hard-working employees of the steel
mills that lined the Detroit River.
Above right: A sign is all that
remains of a local city hall that re-
cently burned down.
Above: A large, rusted lock and
chain secures the gates on a hardware
store that closed long ago.
Right: Workers use a bulldozer to
clear out debris from the basement of
a building that was destroyed by fire.
