*Students take their marks for B-school race The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, January 26, 1994 - 7 SHARING THE SPOTLIGHT O Competition for BBA program mounts as application deadline draws near By REBECCA DETKEN .FOR THE DAILY It's that time of year again. Hun- lreds of students are applying to the bachelor of Business Administration :(BBA) program in the Michigan Busi- iess School, hoping their applications 'ave what it takes to be accepted. While the Business school receives approximately 650 applications a year, only 280 spots are available. With such standards, only the strongest stu- dents survive the application process. ut how do they go about it, and why do they want to enter the program so badly? Because Michigan has one of the finest undergraduate business pro- rams, students face great competi- tion to be admitted. Business school Dean B. Joseph White said the Busi- ness school gained its prestigious reputation through "the quality of the faculty and students, the small class size, the achievement of its gradu- ates, and the placement record." Students presently in the BBA program said they like it for various reasons. Senior Tracy Tubilewicz said, "I love the Business school. The pro- gram encourages participating, which has helped me to become less shy." Another senior, Lynn Kotwicki said, "The reputation of the Business school has been most beneficial in interviewing for jobs. "A BBA from Michigan is often better than an MBA from another school," she said. April Becker, an LSA sophomore who is applying to the program, said she has applied to other business schools as well. However, she said she wants to be in the University's BBA program be- cause "there is a lot of pride and a greater flexibility in the program." When considering applicants, the Business school looks closely at aca- demic records and work experience, as well as extracurricular activities, White said. "We pay special attention to eco- nomics and accounting courses. Build- ing a record of personal achievement to point to is very important as well," he added. Kotwicki said she feels that any business-related work experience is the key. "I had three full summers of gen- eral business work. I got in, whereas a girl that lived down the hall from me had a 3.9 GPA and didn't get ac- cepted," she said. "I think that they're looking for someone that excels in the prerequi- site classes - somebody that has definite career goals and is interested in more than one aspect of the busi- ness world," Becker said. "I definitely want to go into busi- ness," she added. But some students said they are not as certain. Engineering sophomore Andrew Freese said, "I applied because I am not sure of what I want to do, and this gives me another option to look into." White advised those who are in doubt as to whether they want to be in the BBA program to pursue a liberal arts degree and to get a professional education as a graduate student. He also gave suggestions for those students who do not get accepted. "Don't despair. Remember that there are many paths to success in the business world, which the BBA pro- gram is only one of," White said. The final deadline for accepting applications is March 1, but those turned in after Feb. 15 will be consid- ered only as space permits.
