The Michigan Daily - Friday, January 21, 1994 - 7 ormer Black Panther shows students different view of MLK Civil Rights activist Rasul Mohammed details goals, ideals of King's socialist, economic teachings during on-campus speech By SAM DUDEK FOR THE DAILY The Black Student Union continued its celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth- day, with a speech last night by former Black Panther Rasul Mohammed at Hale Audito- rium. With incense filling the Business school auditorium, Mohammed spoke of the "real Dr. King" and his hopes for America in the late 1960s. Mohammed was imprisoned in 1971 as part of the FBI'sCointel Program. He claimed the program's main objective was to termi- nate equal rights leaders before any major civil uprising occurred. During his stay in prison, which ended in November of 1992, he studied the writings of Martin Luther King Jr., and found that the public is not well informed about King's beliefs at the time of his death in 1968. "(The media) takes Dr. King in 1963 and they assassinate him right there," Mohammed said. "They kill him right there on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial." He said today people have an image of a , "watered down, 'I have a dream' King of 1963." "King did not just have a dream," Mohammed added. "He had a plan. A plan for Black America." Reading quotes from King's writings, Mohammed detailed the plan. He told of a more radical King, who be- lieved civil disobedience was the key to attain racial equality. He also discussed King's plans to "disrupt our cities" in the fight for integration;"(King) knew that non-violence wasn't working any- ADS more." But he also added that King was too wise to resort to violence because of the negative effect it would have on his movement. Mohammed spoke of King's demands for compensation for the suppression of the Black community and read excerpts from King's writings about his economic plans for equal- ity. These included a guaranteed income for Blacks who were unable to find work. Mohammed added that many people be- lieve King was killed because these socialist beliefs threatened the stability of the govern- ment. After concluding, Mohammed took ques- tions from an eager audience. He joked and told stories of his childhood, along with re- counting his personal experiences during the civil rights movement. "He's a dynamic speaker," said Tiffany McLean, an LSA senior. "I really appreciated him taking the time to speak to us, as a group of students, because it would be up to us, especially in the Black community, to re- member him." .CLASSIFIED 764"=0557 .... 1 COUNSELORS: Camp Wayne, brother/ sister camp, N.E.
