The Michigan Daily - SPORTSWednesday - Wednesday, January 5, 1994 - 7 HOCKEY NOTEBOOK Oliver named MVP of Great Lakes tournament By ANTOINE PITTS DAILY HOCKEY WRITER Senior forward David Oliver captured Great Lakes Invitational Most Valuable Player honors for his performance in the two games. Oliver had a goal and an assist, including the game-winning goal, in last Tuesday's game against Notre Dame. In the championship game, Oliver scored the first two goals of the game to give him 20 on the season. The first-period goals gave Michigan a 2-0lead over Michigan State en route to its sixth-straight GLI title. ALL-GLI: Joining Oliver on the All-Tournament team were forward Brian Wiseman and defenseman Harold Schock from Michigan. Defenseman Nicholas Perreault from Michigan State and Michigan Tech forward Kyle Peterson along with Tech goaltender Jamie Ram closed out the team. SPREADING THE WEALTH: Twelve different Wolverines recorded at least one point in last Tuesday's semifinal victory over Notre Dame. John Madden (three assists), Schock (one goal and two assists), Wiseman (three assists), Oliver (one goal and one assist), Mike Legg (one goal and two assists), and Mike Knuble (two goals) led the Michigan onslaught. Tim Hogan (one goal), John Arnold (one assist), Ron Sacka (one assist), Steven Halko (one goal), Brendan Morrison (one goal), and Mike Stone (one assist) also contributed for the Wolverines. PACKING THE JOE: The final night crowd of 17,031 gave the GLI a two-day attendance total of 33,250. The capacity of Joe Louis Arena is 19,275. "Overall it was another successful tournament in terms of the crowd," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "I think the games were all good games." LEAGUE LEADERS: The Wolverines have several players at or near the top of the CCHA statistics. Oliver (31 points), Wiseman (29 points), Knuble (28 points), and Morrison (24 points) are the top four in CCHA scoring. Knuble's 16 goals and 13 power- play goals lead the league as well. Wiseman and Oliver are also the top two assist leaders with 24 and 21 respectively. Defenseman Schock is the conference plus/minus leader at+22. Goaltender Chris Gordon (2.25) finds himself second in goals against average. Mean- while, fellow netminder Steve Shields leads with nine league wins. As a team, the Wolverines lead the CCHA, scoring 6.29 goals per game. The Michigan power play tops all other teams in the conference, converting on 35 of 104 opportunities (34 percent). FEDOROv'S FIRST: Junior forward Anton Fedorov recorded his first colle- giate goal in Michigan's 8-2 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Dec. 17th. The game also marked Fedorov's first career start for the Wolverines. "I feel really happy now," Federov said after the game. "I thank Coach for the opportunity to play on the first line. When you play with Oliver and Wiseman, things happen." 4 AP PHOTO Mike Stone shoots against Notre Dame in Michigan's 8-3 semifinal victory over the Irish. The Wolverines have outscored Notre Dame, 21-5, this season. SL1 Continued from page 1 Wiseman continued the Michigan scoring with a power-play goal in the second period for his eighth of the year. John Madden scored his fourth of the year in the third period to close out the scoring for the Wolverines. "This tournament's really special * us," Wiseman said. "We hold a lot of pride coming in and we want to control this tournament." Michigan State's goals came in the third period, breaking up Shields' bid for the shutout. Rem Murray and Kelly Harper notched goals to close the lead to two goals with 3:05 re- maining. However, the Spartans could do nothing more. "These two games are the tough- 't all year to play," Oliver said. "Ev- eryone goes home for a week and everyone's a little rusty. It takes a lot of character and I take my hat off to the boys on the team." In Tuesday's semifinal, the Wol- verines were without the services of Shields. Chris Gordon started for the ill goaltender and earned his fifth vic- tory of the season. t Wiseman also felt the effects of the flu. The Michigan captain missed the entire second period. However, this would not be enough to keep the Wolverines from beating Notre Dame. The score stood tied at three fol- lowing the first period and Michigan only had a one-goal lead going into the third. That is when the Wolver- ines poured it on. Before the GLI, the Wolverines used sweeps of two-game series against Kent and Illinois-Chicago to open up a nine-point lead in the CCHA. Michigan faces the second- place team, Lake Superior, in a two- game series this weekend at Yost Ice Arena. Dec. 10th and 11th against Kent, the Wolverines stormed out to early leads in both games and triumphed, 6- 2 and 5-2, over the Golden Flashes. A week later against UIC, Michi- gan closed the first half of the CCHA season with 8-2 and 9-5 victories over the Flames. This weekend's games against Lake Superior open the 1994 portion of the schedule. The Wolverines hope 'This tournament's really special to us.
