TheMichigan Daily - Friday, January 14, 1994 - 7 Students stop at Union in quest for off-campus housing By MICHELLE FRICKE DAILY STAFF REPORTER Looking for more freedom, parking spots and better food, more than 800 students ventured to the Michigan Union Ballroom yester- day to take part in Off-Campus iousing Day, sponsored by the Housing Information Office. At the event, students were able to gather information and meet prospective landlords from 50 campus-area property owners. Most students who took advan- tage of this opportunity said the event was both convenient and beneficial to their housing search. "I loved it," said Tonya Fuhs, an LSA first-year student. "It's better than looking in the paper, and it's not as much of a hassle as dealing with answering machines. Every- thing is all in one place to pick up the information." The Housing Information Office distributed shopping bags donated by Michigan Book & Supply, which were filled with brochures and booklets about off-campus housing options. Senior Housing Advisor Mary Perrydore, who co- ordinated the event, said attendance was high. "We had a good first hour," she said. "I'm sure people will keep coming throughout the afternoon though." Some visitors to the event were surprised by the abundance of re- sources available to them. "It's just overwhelming," said LSA sophomore Ellen Dobrin, as she surveyed the crowded room. "There's just so many people, and I don't know where to start." Many exhibitors handed out candy, pens and pamphlets as they showcased their available units. "I definitely liked the free candy and pens," added Karl Tyler, an LSA sophomore. "They really got me with that." Many of the representatives from management offices said they come each year to attract prospec- tive tenants. "We come every year, and I wouldn't miss it," said Janene Sveska, leasing manager for Uni- versity Towers. "It's kind of like one-stop shopping, and I think it's a very big price-comparison day." While most exhibitors were flooded with interested students, others were not so lucky. "I think people shy away from' things they don't know, and not many people know about co-ops," said Lydia Cadena, residence direc- tor at Henderson House. "We're the best-kept secret on campus, and we guarantee the lowest University prices for housing.- Many students leaving the Union said they felt relieved that they took the time to stop in be- tween classes. "I had to start looking until now because I had to talk to my parents over Christmas," said Kris Sullivan, an LSA first-year student. "This was my first step, but my friends and I already have an appointment for Saturday." tor at Henderson House. "We're the for Saturday." *CLASSIFIED ADS 764-0557 .....764-0557 HELP WATED HEP WANTDi.......... EARN CASH stuffing envelopes at home. All materials provided. Send SASE to P.O.
