I've never experienced anything like this in my life." Howard does plan on obtaining his degree - a promise he made to his late grandmother. At the end of this semester, he will have earned 83 credits, 37 shy of earning a degree. Howard plans on taking seven class hours this spring and will earn the remaining credits through correspon- dence courses. "I'm not just going to get a de- gree," Howard said. "I want to be the first in my family to get a degree." Furthermore, Howard has already been part of a historic first when, as a rookie, he teamed with Webber - to whom Howard talked 40 minutes be- fore yesterday's announcement - Ray Jackson, Jimmy King and Jalen Rose to become the first freshman quintet to start in a national champi- onship game. "There will never be another class like the Fab Five," Howard said. "We just tried to come out and play our best. We were strong individuals. I didn't know we were going to get this much attention. I don't even like at- tention." Howard has attracted the attention of a number of NBA teams. Scouts project Howard to be drafted any- where between fourth and eighth over- all. One of those teams could be the Detroit Pistons, who will hold one of the draft's first 11 selections, and Howard declared he would "love to play for the Pistons." Howard can regain his college eli- gibility 30 days following the draft, provided he has not signed with an agent, yet that possibility appears re- mote at best. "I'm really serious about this," Howard said. "It's not like I'm just throwing my name in the draft." Howard's departure gives the Wolverines another scholarship to offer. Prep All-Americans Samaki Walker ofColumbus, Ohioand Jerrod Ward of Mississippi have included Michigan on their list of possible schools. Yet, a report in the Colum- bus Dispatch last week said the Wol- verines were third on Walker's list. However, Fisher may have two scholarships to offer after today. Rose is holding a press conference at 11 a.m. He is expected to skip his senior year for the NBA as well. Blue taes fifth title ina row Laxers knock off Wisconsin for Big Ten crown Y By WILL McCAHILL DAILY SPORTS WRITER Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. When Vince Lombardi said that, he wasn't really talking about the Michigan men's lacrosse club, al- though he certainly could have been. To just about no one's surprise, the Wolverines won their fifth con- secutive Big Ten club title, beating Wisconsin in the championship game Sunday at Purdue. In defeating the Badgers, 10-7, the Wolverines kept their record against club teams perfect for the sea- son. Michigan's only loss in 15 games came at the hands of Ohio State's varsity squad, when the Wolverines were at the end of a long, injury- fraught road trip. Since then, the team has come together as a unit, playing almost air- tight defense and piling up monstrous offensive statistics. Michigan coach Robert DiGiovanni said that although this year's team didn't have as many vic- tories as previous clubs, but the 1994 Wolverines were tops as far as win- ning percentage goes. "It's certainly one of, if not the best team I've ever coached here at Michigan," DiGiovanni said. "The guys really deserved to win. It was the most intense game all year - the guys really hustled and played hard." In the title game, graduate attackman Doug Henke led Michigan with four goals, while sophomore midfielder Dave Reichel had three goals and senior attackman Steve Simich chipped in a goal and two assists. Freshman goaltender Anil Arora had 18 saves against the Badgers. The starting defense helped Arora in keeping the Badgers at bay. Se- niors Ben Hohmuth, Gannon Dudlar and junior Marc DeCristofaro held Wisconsin's high-powered starting attack in check for most of the game. Dudlar and Hohmuth combined for special ball-denial coverage of a Wisconsin attackman who had three points in the first quarter. He had no points the rest of the way, rarely touch- ing the ball. After a 3-3 tie at the end of the first quarter, Michigan led the rest of the way.
