The Michigan Daily - Monday, April 18, 1994 -15 'M' netters take two, get back on winning track By JOSH KAPLAN DAILY SPORTS WRITER Aftera month and a half ofplaying athome, the Michigan men's tennis team took its show on the road this weekend. Despite dropping the final meet of its homestand to Notre Dame on Thursday, the team rebounded to sweep a pair of road meets, defeating Northwestern Saturday and Wiscon- sin yesterday, both by the final count of 5-2. Entering the weekend, the Wolverines held a Big Ten record of 3-1 and second place in the conference behind Minnesota. The Wildcats and Badgers sat close behind tied for third place with 3-2 Big Ten records. Returning from the road trip, the Wolver- ines (5-1 Big Ten, 9-6 overall) distanced them- selves from the pack, and stayed tight on the Gophers' heels, who entered weekend play at 7-0. Michigan senior Dan Brakus continues to excel in the No. 1 singles slot, winning over Northwestern's Jeff Giraldo, 6-3,6-7 (4-7), 6- 4, and in straight sets over Wisconsin's David Ortiz, 6-4, 6-4. Brakus remains undefeated in Big Ten play, and has not lost since February. These victories and a straight-set thumping of Notre Dame's Andy Zurcher may improve Brakus' District IV ranking to No. 1. The team also received a pair of victories from John Costanzo, Peter Pusztai, and Adam Wager. Wager has not lost a Big Ten match this season. The Wildcats led Michigan 1-0 going into the singles matches, winning two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Michigan responded with two straight-set wins to regain the lead. The meet was decided in the remaining matches, three of which Michigan would win in three sets, sealing the 5-2 vic- tory. The loss dropped Northwestern to a 7-9 overall mark. Yesterday, Wisconsin (4-3,9-9) was com- ing off a 7-0 shelling of Michigan State, keeping itclose in third place. Michigan never allowed that momentum to help the Badgers. The Wolverines won the doubles point and taking an early one-point lead. The Wolverines rolled through the singles matches, winning four of six en route to a 5-2 triumph. The Wolverines return home to the Lib- erty Sports Complex for dual meets against Purdue and Illinois April 23 and 24. They close out their Big Ten regular season on the road, visiting Ohio State April 30 and Indiana May 1.
