DETROIT (AP) -- Mayor-elect
Dennis Archer yesterday announced
his choice for police chief, a 50-year-
old former gang squad leader with a
PhD, sense of humor and reputation
as a good boss.
Isiah McKinnon is security direc-
tor at the Renaissance Center and was
chief of security for Archer's mayoral
campaign.
McKinnon joined the Detroit Po-
lice Department in 1965 as a patrol
officer. He later worked in recruiting,
public information and on the secu-
rity details for former Mayors Jerome
Cavanagh and Roman Gribbs.
McKinnon also headed the
department's gang squad and was

commander of the Tactical Services
Section when he resigned in 1984.
Archer selected the Alonzo Bates
Academy for the announcement, his
first major appointment. While cam-
paigning just before the Nov. 2 elec-
tion, Archer held a question-and-an-
swer session with students at the pub-
lic school.
"Throughout the campaign, the
No. 1 issue for the people of the city
was crime," said Archer, who takes
office in January.
He said McKinnon was the best
choice to institute community-based
policing, put more officers on the
street and create a "world-class po-
lice department."

Unlike War and Peace,
this revolution will fit in your pocket.

The Revolutionary Newton MessagePad.
The Apple®*Newton' MessagePadT" communications
assistant weighs less than a pound, yet it can turn
the chaos and confusion of almost anyone's
life-especially a college student's-into
order and reason. And between that fifteen-:
hundred-page book on the Russian revolution
you have to finish by Friday, the lab report that's
due first thing in the morning, and the statistics
model that's already late, you could probably use a
little order and reason.
For starters, every Newton MessagePad has a
built-in address book, a to-do list, and a calendar-all of
which work together to make sure you're in the right
place at the right time. It even has an alarm that will remind
you to do things like call your mom on her birthday.
The Newton MessagePad lets you send a fax or receive a
page. You can also subscribe to NewtonMail'T and exchange
electronic mail with other NewtonMail subscribers, as well as
with users of popular electronic services, such as the Internet

Write on the Newton screen and you'll witness something
else that's amazing. Not only will it recognize your handwriting
and turn it into polished text, but it will also recognize
shapes and turn loose sketches into razor-sharp drawings.
This makes it perfect for saving all the brainstorm ideas
you come up with each day. Better still, with the Newton
Connection Kit you can transfer information stored on
your Newton to a PC running Microsoft Windows or a
Macintosh® computer.
In addition, there are a host of applications
available for the Newton that will help you tackle
everything from complex math formulas to slide
presentations.* There are also a variety of
entertainment programs that will help you
spend all of the time you'll be saving by
using your Newton.
So visit your campus reseller and see
what the Newton MessagePad can do for

you. And don't worry, it won't take
you fifteen hundred pages to discover
