TheMichiganDaily - Monday, December 6, 1993 - 7 .Palestinian who killed Israeli soldier shot by troops HOLON, Israel (AP) - A Pales- tinian boarded a bus and opened fire with an assault rifle yesterday, killing areservist before being gunned down by troops. It was the first major attack inside Israel since it signed a peace pact with *he PLO. , Senior ministers warned Israelis to brace for a possible frenzy of at- tacks by opponents of the accord as the Dec. 13 deadline approaches for Israel to start transferring power to the Palestine Liberation Organization in parts of the occupied territories. In Egypt, Israel and the PLO re- sumed talks on Palestinian autonomy. They had been stalled over conditions for Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the West Bank town of Jericho. U.S. Secretary of State War- ren Christopher toured the Middle East to push forward the peace pro- cess and was to meet today in Amman with PLO chair Yasser Arafat and Jordanian officials. A radical Palestinian group op- posed to the accord, Islamic Jihad, took responsibility for yesterday's attack in a leaflet issued in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian attacker tried to hijack the bus when it stopped at an intersection in this Tel Aviv suburb but was killed by Israeli soldiers, po- lice said. A reserve soldier was fatally shot by the attacker, Israel's national public already skeptical about the news agency Itim reported. The reservist apparently was sit- ting behind the driver, and radio re- ports said another soldier was slightly wounded. Investigators at the scene said the attacker's gun, an Israel army assault rifle, apparently jammed. This was the most menacing at- tack inside Israel since it signed the accord with the PLO on Sept. 13 and one likely to engender hostility in a peace process. "In the interim period, the oppo- nents to peace on both sides are flex- ing their muscles and won't stop at anything, they will use any means, to frustrate the process," Health Minis- ter Haim Ramon said yesterday. The latest Palestinian victim was a vegetable vendor who died from his wounds yesterday after being shot by Jewish settlers Saturday as he was riding in a taxi in the occupied West Bank. Witnesses said a settler fired from a road barricade as the taxi was backing up to avoid a confrontation. The armed settlers claimed the car was trying to run them over. In yesterday's attack, police said the Palestinian attacker jumped from a stolen car as the bus idled at a bus stop and began firing into the bus, which carried about two dozen pas- sengers. CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - Millions of Venezuelans turned out for national elections yesterday, stand- ing in calm lines recalling the country's democratic tradition rather than the last two years' violence and scandal. Chief elections official Isidro Morales Paul said the heavy early turnout indicated that more than 80 percent of the 10 million eligible vot- ers might cast their ballots for presi- dent and national and state legisla- tors. Although regarded as South America's paragon of democracy since the last dictator fled to exile in 1958, Venezuela in the 1990s has been plagued by turmoil. Two mili- tary coup attempts in 1992 left more than 300 people dead. The insurgent soldiers were un- happy with the economic policies of President Carlos Andres Perez, which were widening the gap between rich and poor, and were angered by gov- ernment corruption. Perez was suspended from of- fice in May on charges that he mis- used more than $17 million in pub- lic funds. Polling stations were to open at bances reported. Interim Presi dent 5:30 a.m., but some opened anhour or so behind schedule, mostly because poll workers arrived late or were dis- organized. Soldiers were deployed across the country to guard against unrest that many had feared would erupt. But even with the delay in opening poll- ing stations, there were no distur- Velasquez, an independent senator appointed by Congress to serve until Perez's term ends Feb. 2, told report- ers the balloting marked a fresh start for the troubled country.
