The Michigan Daily - Friday, December 3, 1993 - 7 Kevorkian continues hunger strike His lawyer vows to continue fight against Michigan's assisted suicide ban SHE AIN'T HEAVY... PONTIAC (AP) - A lawyer for Dr. Jack Kevorkian said yesterday he would step up his legal challenge to Michigan's ban on assisted suicide while his client continues his jail- house hunger tke. Kevorkian has refused all solid food, lim- iting himself to juices and water since his arrest Tuesday.Hehas f refused to post a $50,000 bond. 4 The latest , urge involves Kevorkian, the Oct. 22 death of Merian Frederick, a 72-year- old with Lou Gehrig's disease. She is one of at least 20 people at whose deaths Kevorkian has been present since 1990. Kevorkian also is charged with violating the ban in two deaths in JVayne County. "He has agood disposition, buthe's weak," attorney Geoffrey Fieger said after he and law partner Michael Schwartz visited Kevorkian at the Oakland County Jail. Fieger said he planned to ask U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen to de- clare the state's prohibition on as- sisted suicide unconstitutional. The law adopted this year in response to Kevorkian makes aiding a suicide a felony with a maximum four-year prison sentence. Fieger said he also would ask the Michigan Court of Appeals and a Wayne County circuit judge to speed up their decisions on the law's consti- tutionality. "If they had acted more expedi- tiously, none of this circus that's hap- pened would have happened," he said. Fieger said another doctor con- tacted his office Wednesday and said he wanted to talk with Kevorkian. He said the other doctor, whom he wouldn't identify, was willing to take over for Kevorkian were he to die. Kevorkian's death probably isn't imminent, a nutrition expert said yes- terday. But he said Kevorkian does face some health risks and likely would begin showing signs of protein defi- ciency after three weeks. The assisted suicide advocate would have been better off had he begun his fast with a few more pounds around his middle, said Dr. C. Wayne Callaway. "Dr. Kevorkian certainly isn't starting out on this with a lot of fat," said Callaway, director of the nutri- tion program at George Washington University Medical Center in Wash- ington, D.C. The unlimited juice supply avail- able to Kevorkian could supply his calorie needs but not his need for protein, Callaway said. He said the protein deficiency probably would begin taking its toll in three to five weeks. At that point, Kevorkian would begin retaining more fluid and losing IFEas 7"40557 strength, Callaway said. Those on liq- uid diets also can suffer from heart irregularities, he said. Oakland County Sheriff John Nichols said jail officials would be keeping a close watch on Kevorkian's health. "Medical staff are available 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and will be observing and monitoring Dr. Kevorkian's physical condition on a continual basis," Nichols said. Kevorkian will receive a meal tray at each of the three daily meals, Nichols said. Last month, Kevorkian went on a hunger strike for three days in the Wayne County Jail. He was bailed out by a lawyer who thought Kevorkian was getting too much pub- licity. Kevorkian's next court date is Dec. 10, when a preliminary examination is scheduled before Royal Oak Dis- trict Judge Daniel Sawicki to deter- mine whether evidence is sufficient to try Kevorkian in Frederick's death. Columbian drug lord assassinated BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Security forces killed drug lord Pablo Escobar in Medellin yesterday, end- ing a 16-month hunt for one of the most wanted men in the world. Police and soldiers shot Escobar dead at a shopping mall in the heart of the city that served as the base for his cocaine empire, according to local radio reports. The death was con- firmed by the country's prosecutor general. Just three days ago, the drug lord's wife and two children flew to Ger- many seeking political asylum, but Bonn rejected their application. Escobar's family, which has been targeted by a vigilante group, returned to Bogota and were staying in a luxury hotel under army protection since the assasination. The vigilante group is believed to be composed of members of the rival Cali drug cartel,,disenchanted former Medellin cartel members and police avenging the deaths of officers slain by the cartel. ***SPRING BREAK '94*** Cancun, Jamaica, Bahamas, South Padre Island from $329 pp! Smili gena manipulates promotio-ns" WASHINGTON (AP)-Investi- gators for the Pentagon and Air Force have found that one of the service's top generals tried to use undue influ- ence to affect promotions of other officers, a senior Pentagon official said yesterday. Air Force Secretary Sheila Widnall is considering what action to take in response to the finding about Lt. Gen. Buster Glosson, said the official. Actions available to the secretary range from rejecting the finding to ordering varied punishments, such as issuing a letter of reprimand or asking the three-star general to take an early retirement. Glosson was traveling yesterday and not immediately available for comment, an Air Force spokesperson said. Widnall also was traveling. Glosson, who is the deputy chief of staff for plans and operations for the Air Force, gained notice as the primary strategist for the air war in the Persian Gulf. The former fighter pilot is known. inside the Pentagon as a fervent advo- cate of the power and potential of air warfare, and is a confidant of Gen. Merrill McPeak, the Air Force chief of staff.
