Carl Levin said yesterday he hopes public pressure and law enforcement sup- port will help a ban on assault weap- ons squeak through the House next year. The Detroit Democrat said those two factors will be "more powerful, I pray and hope, for the Congress than the lobbyists for the NRA (National Rifle Association)." "We don't know whether we're going to win this. It's going to depend on the public," he said. "On the Brady Bill, we saw how the public can liter- ally turn around Congress in 24 hours." It cleared the Senate last week despite a Republican filibuster that twice made it appear the bill was doomed. Levin said the public sup- port shifted the handful of votes needed to get the bill through. President Clinton signed the Brady Bill into law Tuesday. Levin said the Brady Bill, which institutes a five-day waiting period and background check to purchase a handgun, is a good first step and ban- ning assault weapons was the next logical move. But a top official with the NRA, Tom Washington, said the effort would infringe on the constitutional Stakes are high in quest to fix Hubble SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) NASA, in this week's scheduled rescue mission to fit the telescope with corrective glasses and replace other parts that have failed or caused trouble, badly needs a winner. This mission has a lock on super- latives: It is the most thoroughly planned and reviewed of any of the previous 58 shuttle flights, its crew is the most experienced, and their train- ing has been the most extensive. The main lens, 94 inches across, had been ground with edges flatter than they should have been by the depth of one-50th the diameter of a human hair. The Endeavour's four spacewalk- ers will be putting on the kind of show that draws huge television audiences. If the rescue mission fails, that will give ammunition to congressional opponents who want to eliminate the space station, NASA's already wob- bly next big project of the decade. Hubble is not nearly the failure that the Jay Lenos and David Lettermans make it out to be. It has returned some important and spec- tacular scientific returns. "What the public knows about the Hubble is that it is broken," said Ed Weiler, the project's chief scientist. "It is not. We have been doing science for 3 1/2 years, 24 hours a day." "Everyone is still waiting for the first day that a gun gets up by itself and kills someone or holds up astore," Washington said. " A gun is just a tool. We have completely and totally lost sight of the root causes of crime in our society. "This is just the beginning of what the advocates of the Brady Bill hope will be a total abolition on firearms." Washington criticized Levin for pushing for toughergun controls while voting against tougher penalties on criminals. "I wish Senator Levin was as en- thusiastic about really stopping crimes and really stopping criminals as he is about stopping law-abiding, taxpay- ing citizens - his constituents - from exercising their constitutional rights. He's way off base," he said. Levin said all the major law en- forcement groups support the ban. However, James Fotis, the execu- tive director of the 35,000-member Law Enforcement Alliance of America said those groups don't re- flect the view of officers on the street. Fotis said most officers want tougher sentences for criminals PROBLEM PREGNANCY HELP Let us help you choose Life. 769-7283. THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE is now affordable! 45 min.-$20.
