2 -- The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, November 23, 1993 Upper Peninsula loggers claim fear of sabotage by environmentalists LOVE MEANS NOTHING TO A TENNIS PLAYER ASSOCIATED PRESS Upper Peninsula loggers are voic- ing quiet fears of rising "eco-terror- ism" - sabotage of timber harvest- ing equipment by environmental ex- tremists. There are no statistics on the num- ber of incidents in Michigan. Many loggers are reluctant to dis- cuss them, not wanting to inspire copy- cats. But increasingly, loggers are speaking out and taking steps to pro- tect their property. The Michigan-Wisconsin Timber Producers Association is considering a $10,000 camera surveillance sys- tem. "It's traveling just like everything else does from California," said Carl Theiler, the trade group's executive secretary. "I guess it's just our turn." "We're seeing it throughout north- ern Wisconsin and the Upper Penin- sula, but it's very scattered," said John Culhane of the American Pulpwood Association. David Holli, a member of the Michigan Natural Resources Com- mission from Ishpeming, told the Detroit Free Press of several attacks at his logging camp in 1992. First, the vandals punched holes in the radiators of two tractor-size machines called skidders. A few nights later, they dumped BBs and bolts into the hydraulic fluid of the $75,000 machines, which Holli was using to selectively harvest trees on his own property. Next, they removed a transmis- sion line, filled it with a compound used for grinding metal, wiped it clean and replaced it. Then they stole hard- to-replace parts from both skidders. Total damage: about $90,000. In- surance covered less than half. Police have no suspects. ~Free Tutorig FOR ALL MATH, PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, AND ENGINEERING COURSES AT THE 100 AND 200 LEVELS .. --, CENTRAL CAMPUS * Modern Languages Building (MLB) Roc Monday & Thursday * Angell Hall (across from auditoriums, ne Wednesday 6- NORTH CAMPUS *North Campus Commons Lounge: Monday, Wednesday, & Thur p NOVEMBER 1 - DECEMBER 2 A SERVICE OF TAU B ENGINEERING HONORS Cina1gate CHEF JAI TOP GOLD MEDAL' OF DETROIT COBO HALL NAT Sponsored by Michigan Restau Michigan Chefs De Cuisine BLUE RIBBON BEST CH IN WASHINGTOI "BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT1991"-Mi "BEST OVERALL RESTAURANT 1991-- "BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT 19910-A Open 7 days a week 1 1201 S.
