That'sbecause the NCAARules Com- mittee voted to reduce the shot clock to 35 seconds, 10 seconds less than it was a season ago. The change was just one on a list of nine new rules that will go into effect this year. The five-second dribbling viola- tion while closely guarded has been eliminated. In addition, the commit- tee voted to stop the clock after suc- cessful field goals in the last minute of the game and the last minute of any overtime period, without allowing substitutions. Illinois coach Lou Henson said the shot clock change "will definitely im- pact the game. You'll see the ball shot more, you'lseeteams unalittlemore." "I think what we're going to see is, what I call, a lot of 'back-ass' basketball, where oneplayerjust takes the ball and backs in, like they do in the pros, and four guys stand around. I'm not sure that's what the college game should be," Heathcote said. One rule change that may affect Michigan more than other teams is the expansion of the definition of profanity to include "obscene and abusive" lan- guage. Perpetrators can now more eas- ily be assessed a technical foul. NCAA Rules Committee Chair and USC coach George Raveling in- dicated that the stricter rule was par- tially in response to the increase in so- called "trash-talking," which the Fab Five has helped make infamous. A self-proclaimed trash talker, Michigan's Jalen Rose said that de- spite the rule, he will not hesitate to talk to his opponents. "When you're out there playing, you play by instincts," Rose said. "The best players are the ones who just play ball and don't worry about the rules." Many of the new regulations were implemented as aresultof complaints that the game dragged. "The fans want action, the players want action, and in all honesty, I think the coaches want action," Heathcote said. "Maybe these are steps in the right direction." When buying a new car, a buyer looks for certain intangibles - the smell of the interior, the feeling when you drive it. They are what give the automobile its life and soul. Without them, the car is not ev- erything it was advertised to be. The same holds true for this year's Michigan basketball team. Steve Fisher will need certain in- tangibles to surface if the 1993-94 Wolverine model is todrive back to the Final Four. The most important immeasurable item in Michigan's quest forasuccess- ful season is leadership. Last year's team did not have a captain, although Fisher presented the honor to Rob Pelinka at the postseason bust. This leaves Jalen Rose, Jimmy King, Juwan Howard and Ray Jackson to take charge. "I want leadership by example (from) our veteran kids," Fisher said. "Your best leader may not be a vocal leader, but he's the guy who always does the right things. We will expect that from the guys who have been here a while." While leadership may be whatpro- vides the team with that special iden- tity, like the way the steering wheel fits in a driver's hand, the bench is what makes the car run. This season the bench is more like aChevy Malibu; itruns, but the engine knocks and sputters. Ideally, it should resemble the Ford Country Squire sta- tion wagon the family can counton day or night. With the departure of key bench personnel- Pelinka, James Voskuil and Eric Riley -Fisher is faced with a reserve corps that is somewhere be- tween thin and gaunt. The skinny is Leon Derricks, who at 6 feet 9 and 215 pounds, cannot match the physical presence Howard supplies in the paint. A year ago, Pelinka or Voskuil could come off the bench and provide quality defense or naila three-pointer, creating instant scoring punch. But because Fisher has only a five-player bench, which is untested and quite raw, the younger model vehicles will be put to the test early and often. "Out of necessity, more than any- thing, they are going to play," Fisher said. "All the kids have a chance for significant playing time, because they are good, of reason there isn't anyone DuganFifeandJasonE of whom played sparingly will be forced into unfami key players, as will newcc Fields, Bobby Crawford Saint-Jean. jr...!it tar 1 3 . n e au eod fA t-z"*Cla ~I is old in receive y nd check c T 115 Sa No expa "I think it's going to help us," Michigan guard Jimmy King said. "It will make us push theballmore. We're going to have to be in the best shapes of our lives this season and hope to wear other teams down." "I'm not crazy about the 35-sec- ondclock,"Michigan State coach Jud ANDREW LEVY/Deiy Heathcote said. "I think 45 seconds has worked very well." Coaches' reactions to the five- second dribbling violation were more extreme. Minnesota coach Clem Haskins was in favor of the change, because said it transfers some of the referees' control to the players. Henson agreed. "The five-second rule, that one can really bedevastating. We've seen games determined at the end with that call." Heathcote disagreed, saying that the college game is heading in the direction of the NBA. 1U.
