And, all things considered, the new look was a good one. Featuring an up-tempo, perimeter attack, Michigan downed a much big- ger Croatian team, 118-91, though it was outrebounded, 41-36. "I believe height is not a manda- tory thing," Croatian coach Vladimir Vanjak said via his translator. "A lot of other things make the difference. We're big, but we're not aggressive." Vying for the fifth starting posi- tion with the Fab Four, sophomores Dugan Fife and Leon Derricks and freshman Bobby Crawford were ag- gressive as each offered a solid claim to the spot. Fife, who did not score a field goal last season, started for the Wolverines this night. Ray Jackson initiated the scoring with a putback 14 seconds into the game, but it was the Croatian team that got off to the quick start hanging in with Michigan through the first ten minutes. "I thought we were sluggish at the start," Fishersaid. "The Croatian team was more prepared to go." The two teams exchanged leads, and with just over 10 minutes to go in the half, the Croatian team led,29-28. But in the next minute, Michigan woke up, scoring nine unanswered points to take a 37-29 lead with 8:53 to go. Jalen Rose, who saw time at four different positions, completed a three-point play with a free throw just before the Wolverine run began. "The last two years, I was han- dling the ball," Rose said. "Now I'm more ofa swing player, so I'm adjust- ing to the situation." Jackson is also adjusting to a new situation. With the lack of size in the middle, Fisher has moved the 6-foot- 6 Jackson down low with Juwan Howard. Jackson responded with 13 points in only 19 minutes of action. "It was weird," Jackson said of his new role. Equally weird was the presence of several new faces in the Wolverine lineup. Though freshman Olivier Saint-Jean was out with a swollen knee, Fife, Derricks and Crawford all saw significant playing time. Fife, hesitant to shoot last year, went 2-for-4, scoring seven points and dishing out four assists in 30 minutes of action. Crawford, too, made a solid first impression, playing strong defense while knocking down three three- pointers. "I did a pretty good job on defense, butI missed too many open shots," said Crawford, who went 3-for-9 on the night. "Being as nervous as I was, I thought I played pretty well." The last of the three significant newcomers, Derricks, had 12 points, and impressed Fisher the most. "I really liked (Leon's) play to- day," Fisher said. "I thought he was a catalyst for our defense. He was the first guy to challenge the jump shot after we dropped to double team in- side." Ever since former Michigan assistant Larry Pedrie left Michigan to take over the reigns at Illinois-Chicago, the two teams have had a great disdain for each other. During Pedrie's four-year stint at UIC, the Flames have only managed to beat Michigan once. Apparently, Pedrie's frustration and head- aches have. spilled over to his team. After Saturday night's 7-1 Michigan victory, several Wolverine players were not too pleased with what they considered questionable plays and techniques by the Flames. "I think that there has been bad blood between these two teams since I was a freshman," senior David Oliver said. Last season at Yost Ice Arena, the Wolverines and Flames brawled in the third period of an 8-1 Michigan victory. Because of this history, Oliver was prepared for the contest and the scrappy play. However, some of the younger players did not take very kindly to the clutching} and grabbing. In the second period, all five of the Wolverines' penalties were committed by freshmen. Rookie Jason Botterll was whistled for three two-minute minors. After the game he stated that they were all committed in retaliation. "I think I let them get to me," Botterill said.. "I lost my cool. Luckily, it didn't hurt the team." No one, however, could match the anguish that Pedrie experienced after the contest. It was obvious that this was more than a game to him. The fact that his team lost by six goals and gave up 44 shots simply added to his depressed state. He accepted the blame for his team's defeat. "I think I coached a stupid game," he said. "You shouldn't get into a foot race with a team that has better skaters than you." The Michigan players showed no remorse towards the former Wolverine assistant and will probably go after UIC in the same way when the Flames come to Yost, Dec. 17 and 18. Bad blood continues between'M', Flames "They are a very chippy team," Michigan defenseman Tim Hogan said. "There should have been a great deal more penalties called. We worked through it and didn't let it get us down. We kept penetrating and scored some goals to shut them up." SHIELDS WATCH: Goalie Steve Shiel4s, who is currently one win shy ofI tying the NCAA record for career victories, is listed as questionable for this weekend's series with Ohio State at Yost. Shields will most likely return for the College Hockey Showcase at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Nov.26 and 27. ICERS ON THE RADIO: WCBN, the campus FM radio station, will begin play- by-play coverage of Friday home games starting this week. WCBN is 88.3 on the FM dial.
