Tankers survive Minnesota test in season-opening meet By BRETT JOHNSON DAILY SPORTS WRITER Although the No. 3 Michigan men's swimming and diving team came away with two victories this weekend, things didn't go as well as the team had hoped they would. After dominating the Big Ten for the past several years, the Wolverines may have their hands full this season with a much improved Minnesota team. This weekend, Michigan traveled to Madison where it competed in a quadrangular dual meet with Minne- sota and Wisconsin. Michigan State also attended but did not compete against the Wolverines. Michigan soundly defeated the Badgers, 160- 85, but had to pull out the victory over Minnesota in the final relay, 124-119. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, they got down early after a below average performance in the 400-yard medley relay and had to battle back in order to get the win. Highlighting the Michigan per- formances was junior freestyler Gustavo Borges. Borges-one of the Wolverines top returning swimmers - won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events and anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay that led to the Wolverine victory. Also swim- ming on the winning relay were se- nior co-captain Rodney VanTassell, sophomore Courtney Fallerand fresh- man Chris Rumley. "The meet started out on a low," Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek said. "The medley relay was way below par, but Gustavo had a good swim in the free relay. We went from a team low to a high. The first event for the 1993-94 season was as low as we can get. It's good that we came back and took charge." Anotherkeyevent for the Wolveines was the 200-yard backstroke. In the sec- ond to last event, juniors Marcel Wouda and Steve West finished one-two beating out two Minnesota swimmers. This gave the Wolverines the chance they needed to pull out the victory. Borges said he felt that both the relay and the breaststrokers came up big under pressure. "It was a pretty tough match," Borges said. "They were ahead of us until the final relay. The relay saved our lives." Sophomore backstroker Royce Sharp came through with a victory in the 200-yard backstroke. His time of 1:47.88 set a Wisconsin pool record. "He was disappointed with the swim," Urbanchek said. "It was defi- nitely one of the better performances time wise." As for Minnesota, the GoldeW Gophers also won five events. Sopho- more Bernie Zeruhn won both the 200 and 500 freestyle events with times of 1:39.29 and 4:29.59, respec- tively. Redshirt senior Paul Nelson showed why he has been a Big Ten champion in the individual medley events as he won the 200-yard IM in 1:51.17. Nelson barely touched out, Woudato setaWisconsin pool record. Urbanchek said he hopes his team can use the close victory to their ad- vantage as it heads into tougher com- petition. "I sure hope it pays off down the road," he said. "Maybe this will help the team as we head into the Texas's, Stanford's, Cal's and UCLA's. Those teams are a lot stronger than Minne- sota. On a scale of one to 10, Minnesota's athree and we'll be meet- ing nine's and ten's." Minnesota last won the Little Brown Jug in 1986 when the Golden Gophers defeated Michigan, 20-17 at Michigan Stadium. Minnesota has never claimed the Little Brown Jug while playing in the Metrodome.
