We just had to put it all together in one meet." MacDonald (24:41.24) slipped by Kevin Herd, from Iowa, right at the finish line to earn fourth place. "Menon and Herd had about 50 yards on me with the last quarter mile to go," MacDonald said, "But I saw coach standing there, and he told me that I had to catch them, so I did." After capturing the conference title the Wolverines are now focusing on placing in the top five at nationals. "I think we can be even better at 10,000 meters (length of the course at nationals), Warhurst said. "We weren't fading at all today. I think we can get a top five finish at nationals" Men claim Big Ten honors By TOM BAUSANO DAILY SPORTS WRITER The Michigan men's cross country team accomplished a mission Saturday when it squelched Wisconsin's hopes of capturing a ninth straight Big Ten Championship. The Wolverines claimed all the awards handed out at the conference meet- Head coach Ron Warhurst was named conference coach of the year. Kevin Sullivan won both the overall Big Ten Athlete of the Year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Although the team was ranked third going into the Big Ten Championships, it was clear that Michigan had the personnel to win the conference. On paper the Wolverines had the best team, but going into the meet they had been unable toput' it together. Runners had overcame obstacles in order to win as a team. ScottMacDonaldraced well despite sore knees. Matt Schroederovercame the mental stigma of being the runner-up the last three years to have a gutsy performance. Theo Molla fell down early in the race, but displayed a great deal ofdetermination to work his way through the crowd to place 13th. Jim Finlayson," plagued by a knee injury and illnesses all season, pushed past his physical ailments to be Michigan's fifth runner. Sullivan ran an intelligent race to win the individual title. He let the other runners in the lead packset the pace, and when they passed the six kilometermark, he used his world class speed to put the race away. "Today we proved to the rest of the nation that we are not a 17th-ranked, team," Sullivan said."We are looking for good things to happen at districts and nationals." n Michigan's Rose Bowl record shows how common it is for teams to experience a letdown after wining its conference. Despite jubilant moods the Wolverines feel they still have something to prove to the rest of the nation. Since day one Michigan has set winning the Big Tens and placing in the top five nationally as its top priorities. The team must qualify for NCAA race by placing third or better at the districts held November 13 in Bloomington. "We all ran tough today," said junior Ian Forsyth. "We knew what we had to do to win, but this team has much more to offer. We have three weeks to show what we can do." thet f the Wee Wuo: Kevin Sullivan TEAM: Men's Cross Country HoMETowN: Brantford, Ontario YEAR: Freshman Eusiunry: Freshman Wwn: Sullivan led the Wolverines to a surprising win at the Big Ten Championships this weekend with a first-place finish in 24:15.89. "Some people will run better than others. Somebody will have a good race, while somebody who has been running well will have a bad race." Although she won the race, McClimon feels it took the whole team working together for the Wolverines to succeed. "The team effort is what really matters, though," McClimon said. "I wasvery happy with how we did. Allof us develop individually. That's what makes our team successful." Repeating as Big Ten champions was definitely critical to McClimon, who feels that winning the meet was the first step on the way to reaching higher goals. "We will probably stay third in the nation," McClimon said. "But hope- fully, we will move up after nationals. We definitely wanted to repeat this year.
