Wolverines gained their final
win over Alabama, 28-24, in
the 1988 Hall of Fame Bowl,
good for a final record of 8-4.
Michigan remains in the
running for this year's Citrus
and the Holiday Bowls, which
feature the Big Ten's second-
and third-place finishers,
respectively.

(AP) - Corey Pavin rolled in a five-
foot putt for par on the final hole
Sunday, capping a scrappy battle with
Nick Faldo and becoming the first
American in 14 years to win the World
Match Play Championship.
Pavin got his opening when Faldo
landed a 3-wood approach shot in the
trees on the 36th hole.
Faldo, ranked No. 1 in the world,
settled for a bogey-6 on the par-5
hole, leaving Pavin with the pressure
putt to win.
"It was a great match. Up and
down all day long," Pavin said, win-
ning his first tournament in 17 months.
"Too bad it had to end on a note like
that."
Pavin's victory struck another
blow for American golf after U.S.
victories this year in the Ryder Cup
and Dunhill Cup, both also on British
soil.
The Ryder Cup also featured
Pavin's heroics as he won three-of-
four matches at the Belfry in Sutton
Coldfield, England. The twelve
Americans bested Faldo and his Eu-
ropean mates, 15-13.

the richest prizes offered in Europe. *
The final was a tense affair, though'
not always brilliantly played on the
West Course at Wentworth. Aftefia
cautious start, only four of the final 5+
holes were tied.
Pavin, who has never won a ma-
jor, ranked this event just behind the
big four.
"Besides the major champion-
ships, this tournament is next inline," *
he said. "Match play is much more
stressful, but for me it's a lot more-
enjoyable.
"In a way, I wish we could pai-
every tournament match play, bA I
think by the end of the year all my hair
would fall out. It's so much stress."
Pavin, in his third appearance at
the invitation-only tournament, is the
first from his country to collect the
top prize since Bill Rogers in 1979.
Faldo, a two-time winner here,'
beat another American, Jeff Sluman"
in last year's final.
In the third-place playoff, Davilf"
Frost of South Africa defeated'
Scotland's Colin Montgomerie two
