12 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 22,1993 VOLLEYBALL Continued from page 10 year. They only lost one match in the conference last year." Reimers and Lamoureux are among the Big Ten leaders in hitting percentage, with a.316and.308marks respectively. Cook is also the leader in digs. Thy Nitanny Lions' setter, Davidson has the second best assists per game (12.31) this year. Ohio State has a very talented set- terof its own, LauraDavis. The junior leads the conference in assists and was U.S. national "B" team member last summer. Giovanazzi said that Davis is the hub of the Buckeyes offense. "Laura Davis, in my mind, is the best setter in the conference," he said. "Probably one of the top two or three in the whole nation. I think (Ohio State is) a very good team and she just makes them that much better. "She has the ability to turn a bad pass into a good play. Even when they're not passing well they still get good sets because she's that good. I think in a lot of matches she's the deciding factor. I think they run the best offensive attack in the confer- ence, for sure." Michigan received another scare in practice on Wednesday when Sophomore middle blocker Shannon Brownlee went down with an ankle injury. "I think when Shannon went down (Wednesday) they wereall going: 'Oh ohio State's) Laura Davis, In my mind, Is the best setter in the conference - probably one of the top two or three in the whole nation. I think the Buckeyes are a very good team and she just makes them that much better.' - Greg Giovanazzi M' women 's volleyball coach no,notanotherone,"'Giovanazzi said, "but I don't think it was that severe." Giovanazzi said he expects Browlee to play in the two matches, though she may not be at 100%. One area that has not been consis- tent in the Michigan game plan is the setting. Erin McGovern and Julie Scherer have been rotated in and out of the starting position throughout the season. At this time Scherer is Giovanazzi's number one setter. "Julie started last Saturday night, played well," Giovanazzi said, "and she started all week in practice. I think she's playing her best volley- ball of the season, so we're going to go with Julie." 'Demolition Man' Rodman makes splash with Spurs AP PHOTO NEW YORK (AP) - Dennis Rodman'sblond"do" won'tdomuch longer. The free-spirited San Antonio Spurs forward has been sporting an eye-catching bleached flattop during the preseason, looking like Wesley Snipes in the hit film "Demolition Man." If you haven't seen the hairdo yet, better hurry. "I'm going to another color real soon," Rodman said after the Spurs lost to the New York Knicks 95-75 in an exhibition game Wednesday night. The ex-Detroit Piston, already one of the NBA's more eccentric-looking players with tattoos on his arms and leg, gave himself the coiffure. The bleach "ate my scalp up," he said. Rodman didn't eat up the Knicks in the loss, scoring only six points. But he did have 14 rebounds, giving him a 14.7 average in three exhibition games. Otherparts of his game were Rod- man-esque - diving into the stands, throwing elbows and missing all his foul shots. The Spurs acquired Rodman, the two-time defending NBA rebound- ing champion, from Detroit over the summer. The trade for Sean Elliott brought an end to Rodman's stormy stay with the Pistons. Detroit coach Don Chaney spoke Wednesday in a conference call about the disruptions Rodman caused last season. The All-Starregularly missed practices, drew a suspension and was once found sleeping outside the Pis- tons' arena with a rifle in his truck. "There were too many distractions that didn't allow us to compete. Mo- rale-ise, we've cleaned up the Detroit Pistons," said Chaney, an assistant last season who took over for Ron Rothstein. Those comments didn't sittoo well with Rodman. "To hell with them," he said. "I helped them win two championships, now I'm the bad guy." Rodman said he prefers to look ahead to his first season with the Spurs and put his seven-year career with Detroit behind him. Still, he couldn't stop knocking the Pistons. "I don't associate with those guys anymore. I've got a lot of bad feelings toward thatplace, their system," Rod- man said. The Spurs can only hope that a change of scenery will bring out the best in Rodman. He is paired along the front line with center David Robinson, giving the Spurs one of the best defensive duos in the NBA. Rod- man was named to the NBA's all- defensive team in each of the last five seasons. His unusual antics may be better accepted in San Antonio, where coach John Lucas is somewhat of a former free spirit himself. Lucas brought an unconventional style of coaching to the NBA when he took over last sea- son, letting players run the huddle during timeouts, for instance, to test their leadership qualities. "Rodman is the type of player who will be good for me," Lucas said. Dennis Rodman of the San Antonio Spurs, trying out the newest Wesley Snipes look, cradles the ball at practice for an upcoming exhibition. DETROIT (AP) -Keith Primeau had two goals and an assist before picking up a game misconduct, lead- ing the Detroit Red Wings to a 6-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night. After matching his career-high with three points, Primeau and Winnipeg's Nelson Emerson were ejected at 4:07 of the third period for joining a fight between Detroit's Darren McCarty and Kris King of the Jets. Primeau gave Detroit a 1-0 lead at 3:45 with the only goal of the first period, beating Bob Essensa from the deep slot. Emerson made it 2-1 at 6:11, but Primeau moved the lead back to two goals just 29 seconds later. Terry Carkner intercepted a clear- ing pass by Mike Eagles and fired a shot that was tipped by McCarty, then Primeau on the way to the net. Steve Chiasson's second goal of the year made it 4-1 with one minute left in the second. Teemu Selanne cut the Detroit lead to two goals at 10:01 of the third with his first goal since an opening-night hat trick. Sergei Fedorov and Ray Sheppard scored at 11:22 and 13:57 to ice the game for Detroit. Detroit captain Steve Yzerman left the game after injuring his neck in the first period. Yzerman was hurt in a collision with Winnipeg's Thomas Steen. The initial diagnosis was a pinched nerve, but Yzerman was taken to Detroit's Henry Ford Hospital for X-rays. The game also marked the first officiated by both of the Devorski brothers. Paul, a six-year veteran, ref- ereed the game while rookie Greg was one of the linesmen. 4w 0 i i " I I N ~~ W N I . , U* I K'. ml i VJ I I
