Boy, our puritanical attitudes toward sex and sexuality were certainly in their prime, weren't they? And even if there had been places like Rick's or the Necto, you wouldn't have dared to take a date there. Such establishments are not proper for a lady! And we're not stupid. Even back then there were exclusive male, ahem, entertainment palaces (maybe not quite as extravagant as Deja Vu, but we'll wager that you could still buy a table dance in 1912). Those places, however, are not discussed amongst ladies, so as not to offend their delicate ears. At any rate, Mack's Tea Room boasts "seclusion" combined with "culinary perfection." (So this is what they did in the pre-coffee shop days.) A nice cozy little atmosphere where you could discuss such important issues as - well, what would you discuss? A man certainly wouldn't discuss lofty political issues like big business, monopolies or Standard Oil with his lady friend. The 1912 female mind could not be expected to comprehend all that political mumbo-jumbo. If nothing else, you could spend at least a few hours discussing President Taft and his slight weight problem. And hey, just to keep it safe, you could go on Saturdays and listen to the orchestra. That way you wouldn't have to talk. And ladies are supposed to be suckers for that artsy stuff, right? So the next time you're looking for something to do with your Saturday night, take your lady friend, or male friend, or whomever out for tea. And have fun with it! Talk in stilted faux English accents and iscuss the change in climates.
